Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master

Inside the hidden basement of the abandoned dock warehouse, a small fire flickered inside an oil drum.

Clara sat wrapped in a heavy blanket, her eyes fixed on the man she had mourned for half a decade. Julian looked older, hardened, with a long jagged scar running from his jawline down into his collar. Next to him sat the boy, whose name was Leo.

"You're alive," Clara said, tears flowing freely down her cheeks. "All this time... you let me suffer. You let me believe you were dead while I sat in that chair!"

"I had to die, Clara," Julian said softly, refusing to meet her gaze. "If I had stayed alive, Richard and the board would have killed both of us immediately. The crash was orchestrated. I survived only because Leo’s mother—a head researcher at Vance—found me before Richard’s men could finish the job."

"Leo’s mother?" Clara asked, looking at the boy.

"Her name was Sarah," Julian said quietly. "She was the true creator of the neurotoxin... and the antidote. She spent five years working in secret to synthesize a cure for what they were pumping into your system. But three days ago, Richard’s mercenaries found our safehouse. Sarah gave her life to get Leo and the antidote to me."

Leo looked down at his worn shoes, clutching his mother's old compass in his small hand.

"The boy was the only one small enough to slip into the gala," Julian continued. "He injected you with the localized antidote when he touched your knee, Clara. The 'count to three' was just to give the serum time to hit your nerve receptors."

Clara stared at Julian, a mixture of immense relief and profound betrayal warring inside her chest. "If you have the cure, if you have the evidence on that drive, why didn't we go to the police?"

Julian looked up, his eyes cold as ice. "Because the police are bought. The judges are bought. Richard didn't act alone, Clara. The Vance Empire isn't just a pharmaceutical company anymore—it’s an international syndicate weaponizing medical research. And the man pulling Richard's strings isn't even a Vance."

"Who is it?" Clara asked.

Julian turned toward the dark corner of the room, where a tied-up Dr. Kane was regaining consciousness.

"Tell her, Doctor," Julian commanded. "Tell her who bought the company three years ago."

Dr. Kane coughed up blood, spitting on the floor with a bitter laugh. "You're too late, Julian. He already knows you're in the city. By tomorrow morning, the entire country will think Clara Vance escaped from her handlers due to mental instability, killed her own doctor, and went on the run with a terrorist."

"WHO IS HE?!" Clara demanded, standing up, her strength returning rapidly as the antidote spread through her veins.

Kane grinned maliciously. "Your father, Clara. Charles Montgomery is alive. And he wants his empire back."
