Chapter 6 - The Face of the Monster

Clara stood her ground, her vision clearing as the smoke drifted away. Behind her father stood Richard Vance, looking nervous and sweating profusely, clutching a silenced submachine gun.

"Father," Clara said, her voice dripping with venom. "Or should I call you the monster who stole my life?"

Charles sighed, shaking his head with mock sadness as he leaned on his cane. "Stole your life? Clara, I gave you your life! Do you have any idea how dangerous this world is? When Julian started poking his nose into my international clients, I had to protect you! The chair was the safest place in the world for you. Nobody targets a crippled widow!"

"You poisoned me!" Clara screamed, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "You made me suffer every single day!"

"A small price to pay for survival," Charles replied smoothly. He gestured to his guards. "Bring me the boy and the drive. Kill Julian and the doctor."

"Don't move!" Richard suddenly barked, aiming his gun—not at Julian, but at Charles.

The room froze.

"Richard?" Charles asked calmly, turning his head slowly toward his brother-in-law. "What are you doing?"

"I'm tired of taking orders from a ghost!" Richard yelled, his hands trembling on the gun trigger. "I did the dirty work! I ran Vance Enterprises while you hid in the shadows making billions off bio-weapons! You promised me full control once Clara was out of the picture!"

"And you believed me?" Charles chuckled softly. "Oh, Richard. You were always so foolishly naive."

Before Richard could pull the trigger, a red laser sight appeared on his forehead. A single suppressed shot rang out from the rafters above. Richard gasped, dropping his gun as he fell dead onto the concrete.

"Now," Charles said, stepping over Richard's body without a second glance. "Where were we? Ah, yes. The drive, Clara. Give it to me, or I order my sniper to put a bullet through Julian's heart."

Julian looked at Clara and shook his head frantically. "Don't do it, Clara! Upload the files!"

Clara looked at the laptop sitting on the crate behind her. The progress bar for the global leak read: 98% UPLOADED.

She needed ten more seconds.

"All right, Father," Clara said, stepping forward, holding the silver pocket watch up in her hand. "You want the watch? Come get it."
