My stepmother, Vivian, found herself in a financial nightmare. It turned out my father, Richard, had accumulated massive debts before his passing, which Vivian had tried to cover up using her country club investments. Two weeks after the boardroom showdown, I drove a sleek black Rolls-Royce to my childhood home.
Vivian was standing on the porch, surrounded by cardboard boxes, crying as movers carried out her expensive paintings and antique furniture.
I stepped out of the car, holding an umbrella to shield myself from the light summer drizzle.
“You came to gloat,” she hissed, her eyes red and puffy.
“I came to buy,” I corrected her, handing her a document. “I’ve bought the foreclosure rights to this house. This property belongs to C.V. Holdings now. You have thirty minutes to pack what you can carry. And unlike you, I won’t let the housekeeper do it for you.”
