Chapter 2 - The Freezing of the EmpirePanic is a physical contagion. You could see it spread across the foyer in real-time.

Grant’s face twisted from shock into frantic, desperate denial. He lunged forward, his hands outstretched in a pathetic plea. "Clara—wait! Babe, honey, listen to me! It was a joke! A test! Vanessa meant nothing, she was just a—a passing distraction! We’ve been married for five years, you love me, you wouldn't ruin everything we built together over a misunderstanding!"
Vanessa shrank back against the grand staircase, clutching her red silk dress like armor. "Grant, tell him he's lying! Tell everyone she's insane! She forged those papers! She's trying to steal your company!"
"Shut up!" Grant roared at Vanessa, his mask of arrogant control completely shattered. He turned back to me, tears actually welling in his eyes. "Clara, please. Think of the family. Think of the employees. You can't just walk away."
"I am not walking away, Grant," I replied calmly, adjusting the cuffs of my blouse. "I am evicting you."
Julian Vance stepped forward, holding a second document out for the board members to see. Several senior executives—men who had sneered at me just ten minutes ago—pushed past each other to read the text, their faces turning the color of chalk.
"Effective immediately," Julian announced to the room, "Vance Holdings is exercising its collateral clause under Section 9 of the primary debt restructuring contract. All lines of credit extended to Hargrove Holdings are frozen. All corporate accounts managed by this branch are seized pending a federal audit for corporate fraud and asset misappropriation."
"You can't do that!" shouted Thomas Sterling, the senior board member who had spent the evening laughing the loudest. "That will destroy our stock price tomorrow morning! The market will eat us alive!"
Julian gave Thomas a pitying look. "The market will do worse than that, Mr. Sterling. By sunrise, every major bank in the country will be informed that Grant Hargrove has been operating a fraudulent subsidiary scheme using forged documents—documents he proudly displayed in front of multiple witnesses tonight."
Julian turned back to me, bowing slightly once more. "The cars are waiting outside, Miss Vance. Your father is expecting you at the penthouse. And as for this house..." Julian swept his hand across the grand foyer. "...it was purchased under a secondary Vance holding trust. Formal eviction notices for every single occupant, including Mrs. Eleanor Hargrove, will be served by 8:00 AM."

Eleanor shrieked, clutching her chest. "Eviction? From my home? I built this family! You cannot throw me out!"
"You built nothing, Eleanor," I said, walking past her toward the heavy open doors. I stopped right beside her, my voice dropping to a freezing whisper. "You spent thirty years playing society queen while living off my father’s charity. Enjoy your last night under this roof. Tomorrow, you'll be sleeping on the street."
