Chapter 6 - The Scavengers TurnThe fallout was swift and merciless.

Within forty-eight hours of the corporate collapse, the elite social circles of the city—the very people who had sipped champagne with Eleanor Hargrove and applauded Grant’s lavish galas—turned on the family like a pack of starving wolves.

In an exclusive private dining room at Manhattan’s most prestigious restaurant, Thomas Sterling and three former Hargrove board members sat in tense, miserable silence.

The heavy oak door swung open, and Vanessa walked in.

She had tried to salvage what was left of her dignity, wearing a designer trench coat and oversized sunglasses, but the dark circles under her eyes and the frantic jitteriness of her hands gave her away.

"Thomas," Vanessa said, rushing over to the table and pulling out a chair. "Thank God you answered my messages. We need to figure out a plan. Grant is completely useless—he’s locked himself in a cheap motel downtown and won't stop crying. The banks have seized my apartments, my cards—everything!"

Thomas Sterling didn't look up from his martini. He took a slow sip, swirling the olives around the glass with chilling indifference.

"Your messages, Vanessa?" Thomas said coldly. "If I recall correctly, I told your secretary never to contact me again."

Vanessa blinked, her voice dropping into a desperate register. "What are you talking about? We've been friends for two years! You used to invite me to every charity auction, you praised my taste—"

"I tolerated you because Grant was the CEO and you were his favorite accessory," Thomas interrupted, finally lifting his head to fix her with a look of pure disgust. "Do you have any idea what your little 'prank' last night cost us? My personal assets are under federal review. My firm is facing a class-action lawsuit from shareholders. And all because Grant decided to humiliate his wife to impress a gold-digger."

"It wasn't my fault!" Vanessa shrieked, drawing the attention of neighboring tables. "Grant told me to do it! He said she was just a nobody!"

"A nobody?" A smooth, calm voice cut across the private dining room.

All heads turned toward the archway.

I stood there, flanked by two corporate security guards, wearing a classic black dress and a diamond-encrusted pearl necklace that had once belonged to Eleanor Hargrove’s private collection—now legally reclaimed and auctioned off.

Vanessa’s face turned the color of ash. "Clara..."

I walked slowly to their table, stopping right beside Vanessa’s chair. I looked down at her with a faint, amused smile.

"You always had very expensive taste in other people's property, Vanessa," I said softly. "Too bad you never learned the difference between borrowing and owning."

"You ruined us!" Vanessa screamed, standing up so fast her chair tipped backward onto the floor. "You planned all of this! You sat there pretending to be a meek little housewife just so you could destroy us from the inside out!"

"No, Vanessa," I replied, my voice chillingly calm. "I gave you five years of peace, stability, and unearned luxury. You chose to mistake my patience for weakness. That was your first mistake. Your second was thinking Grant’s last name actually meant something."

I turned my gaze to Thomas Sterling, who immediately looked down at his glass, unable to meet my eyes.

"Tell the remaining creditors that Vance Global will acquire the remaining Hargrove assets tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM," I told the room at large. "Pennies on the dollar. Exactly what they are worth."
