Chapter 4 - The Unmasking of AsterlineThe live broadcast swept through the building like wildfire. Down in the first-floor lobby, hundreds of engineers, developers, and support staff stopped in their tracks, staring up at the massive monitors as Arthur Sterling’s voice echoed off the marble walls confessing to corporate sabotage.

Up in the boardroom, Julian slumped back into his chair, defeated, as federal agents slapped steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"You can't do this!" Julian shrieked, his pristine suit jacket rumpling as he was hauled to his feet. "Clara! We were going to be partners! We were building an empire!"

Clara stood motionless by the window, watching the rain streak the glass. She didn't look at him as he was dragged past her. Her silence was a wall far more impenetrable than any glass or steel in the building.

When the heavy doors finally clicked shut behind the federal marshals, an eerie, heavy silence descended upon the boardroom.

Arthur Sterling remained seated at the end of the long glass table. The formidable, untouchable titan of Seattle finance suddenly looked small, frail, and utterly hollow.

"You think you’ve won, Clara," Arthur rasped, his voice trembling as he looked up at her through narrowed, venomous eyes. "You think destroying my family saves yours? You don't even know the half of it. Check the foundation accounts. Check what your precious mentor funded before he died."

Clara didn't flinch. She gestured to Ethan, who stepped forward and tapped a command onto the central console.

A secondary encrypted file decrypted on the main screen: Project Echo - Financial Ledger.

Clara’s eyes scanned the rows of numbers, and for the first time all evening, the color drained completely from her face.

The file detailed financial transfers spanning over a decade—millions of dollars funneled from Asterline’s early seed rounds directly into offshore accounts controlled not by Arthur Sterling, but by Clara’s own beloved, deceased university professor and adoptive father, Dr. Alistair Vance—Ethan’s father.

Ethan stood frozen, staring at the screen. The color vanished from his face as well.

"What... what is this?" Ethan signed, his hands shaking violently. "My father... my father died believing Arthur stole our work. He spent his final years trying to expose him."

Arthur let out a harsh, rasping laugh, coughing into a handkerchief. "Alistair didn't try to expose me, boy. Alistair sold you out. He took my hush money to keep you out of the labs while we stripped Aegis for parts. Clara was his star pupil—you don't think she was just a coincidence, do you?"

Arthur pointed a shaking, gnarled finger directly at Clara.

"She was placed in your orbit from day one, Ethan. Asterline wasn't built on stolen code. It was built as a front to launder the very patent royalties Alistair signed away to me."

The silence in the boardroom turned to ice.

Ethan slowly turned his head, looking at Clara with eyes filled with a fresh, agonizing devastation.

"Clara..." Ethan signed, his hands moving so slowly they barely seemed to form the words. "Did you know?"
