Chapter 8 - The Backdoor TrapVictor paused, his eyes narrowing suspiciously. "What backdoor?"

Clara gave a cold, humorless smile. "You assumed that because Alistair Vance sold you the core algorithm six years ago, you owned the entire architecture. But you forgot one fundamental rule of engineering, Victor: The person who designs the user interface always controls the API gateways."
Before Victor could shout an order, Ethan’s hands flashed a rapid command across the server console behind him.
Click. Whir. Zap.
Instantly, every single halogen work light in the warehouse flickered and died, plunging the vast space into pitch-black darkness.
Cries of confusion erupted from the tactical operatives surrounding them. Red laser sights crisscrossed the gloom in erratic, blinded patterns.
"Secure the perimeter! Shoot out the servers!" Victor’s voice yelled in panic from somewhere in the dark.
In the absolute darkness, Clara didn't need light. She had lived in silence and shadow her entire life. She knew the spatial geometry of the warehouse down to the centimeter—felt through the vibrations of the concrete floor under her boots, the air pressure shifts of the tactical operatives moving around them, and the hum of the server racks.
Ethan grabbed her hand in the dark, his fingers gripping hers with fierce, unshakable trust.
Follow me, his hands spelled rapidly against her palm in the tactile sign language they had practiced in the dark.
They moved in perfect sync, slipping between the rows of heavy shipping crates as suppressed gunfire cracked through the air, sending sparks flying off the metal containers above their heads.
"They're heading for the secondary loading dock!" a tactical voice shouted.
"Cut them off!"
Ethan pulled Clara behind a massive steel shipping container, shielding her body with his own. He pulled a heavy tactical tablet from his belt, his fingers flying across the backlit glass.
"The backdoor is open," Ethan signed, the faint green light of the screen illuminating his intense expression. "Every financial record, every patent transfer, and every illegally acquired military acoustic file from VaneCorp is currently uploading directly to the federal cybercrime division and every major news network in the country."
Victor’s voice echoed through the warehouse, furious and desperate. "Find them! Tear this place apart!"
Footsteps rushed toward their hiding spot. Flashlights cut through the gloom, their beams sweeping across the concrete floor just inches from Clara’s boots.
Ethan looked down at Clara, his hand resting gently against her cheek. In the chaos of gunfire and shadows, his eyes held a profound, quiet tenderness.
"If we don't make it out of here, Clara..." Ethan signed slowly, his fingers steady. "I want you to know. Meeting you at Winterglass House... it wasn't an accident."
Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs. She looked up at him through the dim light. "What do you mean?"
"I knew who you were before the girls asked for your chairs," Ethan signed, a faint, bittersweet smile touching the corners of his lips. "I watched you build Asterline from the ground up. And even when I thought you betrayed my family... I couldn't stop loving you."

Clara’s eyes filled with tears. She pulled him close, her hands pressing against his chest. "Then don't stop now."
Before Ethan could reply, a heavy flashlight beam blinded them, and a tactical operative rounded the corner of the container, raising a weapon directly toward them.
