Chapter 1 - The Trap Springs

The silence in the hospital room was deafening. Daniel froze, his hand still clamped around my chin, while Vanessa’s grip on my wrists turned instantly cold and sweaty.
My father, Arthur Sterling, didn’t just walk into the room; he commanded it. Behind him stood four men in dark suits, their expressions unreadable but inherently menacing.
"Arthur," Daniel stammered, his voice losing every drop of its previous arrogance. He quickly dropped his hand from my face and took a step back, trying to smooth down his jacket. "This isn't what it looks like. Claire became hysterical. She was trying to pull out her IV lines, and we were just trying to restrain her for her own safety—"
"Shut your mouth, Daniel," Arthur said. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried the weight of a guillotine.
Vanessa scrambled away from my bedside, trying to hide behind Daniel. "Mr. Sterling, please, I was just trying to help—"
"I know exactly who you are, Vanessa Vance," my father interrupted, not even looking at her. He walked over to my bed, his eyes softening only when he looked at me. He gently touched my forehead. "Are you alright, Claire?"
"The baby is kicking," I whispered, my voice trembling but clear. "But the camera caught everything."
Daniel’s brow furrowed. "Camera? What camera?"
I reached down and unclipped the small, matte-black button from my hospital gown. I held it up between my fingers. A tiny, blinking red light pulsed on its side.
"You thought you were clever, Daniel," I said, a cold smile finally breaking through my pain. "You thought cutting the hospital's CCTV wires in the hallway before you came in would give you a blind spot. But this stream didn't go to the hospital security desk. It went directly to my father’s legal team, the FBI financial crimes division, and a live private server."
Daniel’s face drained of color. "Claire... you wouldn't."
May you like
"Oh, she didn't," my father chimed in, stepping between Daniel and my bed. "But I did. You thought you were stealing from a fragile woman, Daniel. You forgot who built the foundation of the company you call yours. You didn't just assault my daughter tonight. You signed your own death warrant."
Before Daniel could speak, two of the suits stepped forward, handcuffs gleaming under the harsh fluorescent lights.
