Chapter 4 - Out of the Ashes

Three weeks later.
The glass windows of the Sterling Penthouse looked out over the city skyline. I sat in a rocking chair, holding a tiny, breathing miracle wrapped in a pink blanket. She was born premature, but she was a fighter. I named her Victoria. Victory.
My father walked into the room, carrying a stack of legal documents and two cups of tea.
"How is she?" he asked softly.
"Sleeping like an angel," I smiled, kissing Victoria's forehead. "Has the news broken yet?"
"It’s the top story on every network," Arthur replied, handing me a tablet.
The headlines were brutal:
FALL OF THE HOUSE OF HAYES: TECH MOGUL ARRESTED IN BILLION-DOLLAR MONEY LAUNDERING SCHEME
MISTRESS TURNS STATE'S EVIDENCE: VANESSA VANCE EXPOSES DANIEL HAYES TO AVOID PRISON TIME
"Vanessa talked?" I asked, not surprised at all.
"The moment she realized Daniel didn't have a penny left to pay for her defense lawyer, she sang like a canary," my father chuckled. "She gave the feds the encryption keys to Daniel's private laptop. She admitted to helping him forge your signature on the insurance policies."
I froze. "Insurance policies?"
May you like
Arthur’s expression turned grim. "Daniel didn't just want you to sign the divorce papers to get the assets, Claire. He had taken out a five-million-dollar life insurance policy on you. The plan tonight was to force you to sign the papers, induce a medical emergency through Vanessa—who we found out was bribing a night nurse to alter your IV drip—and claim the payout."
A chill ran down my spine. The kick, the restraint... it wasn't just a burst of anger. It was a calculated attempt on my life.
