Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Plot Twist

Six months passed. The company had been rebranded under the Sterling name, and profits were at an all-time high. The drama had settled, and I was finally enjoying life as a single mother.
One evening, my father and I were celebrating Victoria’s half-birthday at our private estate. The nanny had taken the baby upstairs to sleep.
"You did well, Claire," my father said, raising a glass of champagne. "You took a tragedy and turned it into an empire. I'm proud of you."
"Thank you, Dad," I said, clinking my glass against his. "I couldn't have done it without your legal team finding those offshore accounts."
My father smiled, but his smile didn't reach his eyes. He took a slow sip of his drink. "Yes. The offshore accounts. It’s funny how Daniel managed to set up such a complex network all by himself, isn't it?"
I frowned slightly. "What do you mean? You said he was working with an Eastern European syndicate."
"He thought he was," my father said smoothly, setting his glass down. He pulled a small, old leather notebook from his breast pocket and slid it across the table toward me.
I opened it. Inside were handwritten bank routing numbers, dates, and signatures dating back ten years—long before I even met Daniel. And the handwriting belonged to my father.
My breath hitched. "Dad... what is this?"
"Daniel was an ambitious idiot, Claire," my father said calmly. "He wanted wealth so badly he was willing to cut corners. Ten years ago, I needed a fall guy for a legacy financial liability within our own corporation. I created the Eastern European syndicate front. I guided Daniel into my life. I allowed him to marry you."
I stared at him, my heart stopping. "You... you set this up? You let a monster into my life?"
"I needed him to steal the money so it could be cleaned legally through the federal seizure loophole," Arthur explained, his voice entirely devoid of remorse. "Of course, I didn't expect him to actually fall in love with his secretary or become violent with you. That was a variable I had to correct quickly. That's why I gave you the camera button."
I looked at the man who had raised me. The man who had saved me in that hospital room. He wasn't just my savior. He was the architect of the entire nightmare.
"So," I whispered, the realization wash over me like ice water. "Daniel didn't steal from your empire."
"No, Claire," my father smiled warmly, patting my hand. "He built it for us. Every single dollar he thought he was stealing was just moving from my left pocket to my right pocket. And now, it all belongs to you and Victoria. Aren't you happy?"
I looked down at the notebook, then up at my father’s smiling, terrifying face. I realized then that in the world of the ultra-rich, there are no heroes. There are only monsters who know how to wear a suit.

I slowly closed the notebook, took a sip of my champagne, and smiled back.
"Very happy, Dad. Let’s make sure nobody else ever finds out."
