Chapter 6 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

Title: The True Mastermind

The next morning, the sun broke over the Carter Manor. The estate was under heavy guard, with federal agents sweeping the premises and restoration crews repairing the damaged foyer.

Inside the nursery, Ethan and Lily were sitting on the plush rug, playing with their building blocks. For the first time in six months, their laughter filled the room.

Michael sat on the sofa nearby, watching them with tears in his eyes. He had spent the last twelve hours hugging them, reassuring them, and promising that no one would ever hurt them again.

Dr. Vance walked into the room, holding a medical report. "Michael, the kids are completely clear of any chemical toxins. Vanessa—or Elena—only used physical intimidation on them. They need therapy, but physically, they are going to recover completely."

Michael let out a massive sigh of relief. "Thank you, Robert. What about the toxin in my system?"

"We administered the antidote. You’re going to be fine," Dr. Vance said, but his expression remained troubled. "However... something came up during the FBI’s interrogation of Elena Rostova."

Michael stood up, stepping out onto the balcony with Dr. Vance. "What did she say?"

"She confessed that she didn't get hired by Julian Vance," Dr. Vance whispered, looking around nervously. "Julian was just the muscle. The person who hired her, gave her access to your household, and supplied the Thallium poison... was someone inside your family."

Michael’s blood ran cold. "My family? I don't have family left except my kids. My parents died ten years ago in a plane crash—"

"Did they?" Dr. Vance interrupted, handing Michael an old, yellowed file. "Look at the flight manifesto from that crash ten years ago. One body was never recovered."

Michael opened the file. His eyes locked onto a photo of his older brother—Arthur Carter—who was presumed dead in the Swiss Alps decade ago.

Below the photo was a recent surveillance image taken two weeks ago in London. Arthur Carter was alive, well, and standing right beside the CEO of the world's largest private military corporation.

Michael’s hands shook with rage and shock. His own brother, whom he had mourned for ten years, was the architect behind the nightmare his children had suffered.
