Chapter 1 - The Trap in the Marble Hall

The air in the Kensington drawing room was suffocating. Lady Eleanor Whitmore stood like an empress, the diamond bracelet catching the firelight, casting sharp, jagged reflections across the room. Behind her stood Julian, Alexander’s ambitious cousin, wearing a mask of perfect, rehearsed sympathy.
"Dismiss her, Alexander," Eleanor repeated, her voice dripping with cold authority. "The security team found it in her coat pocket. We cannot have a thief near the children."
Grace Ellison stood frozen. Her knuckles were white, clutching the hem of her simple uniform. "I didn't take it," she whispered, her voice cracking but steady. "I have never touched your jewelry, Lady Eleanor."
"Quiet, girl!" Julian snapped, stepping forward. "The evidence is right there. Do you think the bracelet crawled into your pocket by itself?"
Alexander Whitmore remained by the heavy oak doors, his long black overcoat still dusted with London rain. The journey from New York had left his eyes bloodshot, his jaw rigid. The entire room expected him to explode, to unleash the infamous Whitmore wrath that had crushed corporate rivals across two continents.
Instead, he walked slowly toward his mother. He didn't look at the diamonds. He looked at Grace.
In his mind, the video loop from the hotel room played over and over: Iris taking five shaky steps. Grace kneeling, her face filled with pure, unadulterated joy, waiting to catch his broken little girl.
"Where exactly was this found, Mother?" Alexander asked, his voice deceptively quiet.
"In her locker, inside her winter coat," Eleanor said, crossing her arms. "Julian witnessed the guard pull it out. Thank God we checked before she could smuggle it out of the estate."
"I see," Alexander murmured. He took the bracelet from his mother’s hand, weighing it. Then, he turned sharply to the head of security. "Bring me the security footage of the staff locker room from 4:00 PM today."
Julian’s posture stiffened almost imperceptibly. "Alexander, really? You're going to waste time reviewing tapes? The girl was caught red-handed. Just fire her and let the police handle it."
"I don't recall asking for your permission to review security in my own house, Julian," Alexander said, his eyes flashing like flint.
Ten minutes later, the security laptop was set on the marble table. The video played. Because the locker room was a semi-private area, the camera only covered the main hallway leading to the lockers.
At 4:15 PM, Grace was in the nursery with the twins. But the footage showed someone else walking down the locker room hallway. Someone holding a small, glittering object in their palm.
It was Julian’s personal assistant.
A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the room. Grace gasped, covering her mouth. Julian’s face drained of color, turning a sickly shade of grey.
"It seems," Alexander said, slamming the laptop shut with a sound like a gunshot, "that my bracelet was planted. The question is, Julian... why are you so desperate to get a humble nanny thrown into prison?"
The Hook: Julian opened his mouth to speak, but Alexander raised a hand, stopping him. "You won't answer me now. But you will answer the police. Security, remove Julian and his assistant from this property immediately. If I see either of them within a mile of my daughters, I will ruin you before sunrise."
As Julian was dragged out, cursing and sweating, Eleanor watched in horror. But Alexander didn't care about his family's outrage. He turned to Grace, whose tears were finally falling.

"Mr. Whitmore..." she choked out.
"You're not going anywhere, Grace," Alexander said, his voice softening for the first time in years. "In fact, your duties just changed. We need to talk about what happened in the nursery yesterday."
