Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

The house felt safer with Eleanor gone, but a thick cloud of paranoia now hung over the estate. Alexander began spending more time at home, working from his study just to be close to the nursery. The distance between him and Grace began to shrink.

One evening, after the twins had fallen asleep, Grace found Alexander in the kitchen, pouring himself a glass of whiskey. The sharp lines of his face looked exhausted, haunted by a grief he never spoke aloud.

"You should sleep, Mr. Whitmore," Grace said quietly from the doorway.

Alexander looked up, a faint, sad smile touching his lips. "I don't sleep much, Grace. And please, call me Alexander. When we're behind these doors, the corporate titles don't mean anything."

She walked in, pulling a mug to make some tea. "Your mother said something to me before she left. About the night your wife, Sarah, died."

Alexander’s hand gripped his glass tighter. The ice clinked sharply. "My mother has a venomous tongue, Grace. You shouldn't listen to her."

"She said the brakes failed," Grace said, her voice gentle but persistent. "She implied it wasn't an accident."

Alexander sighed, a heavy, broken sound. He set his glass down and leaned against the counter. "Sarah was suffering from severe postpartum depression after the twins were born. The night she died, we had a terrible argument. She stormed out into a torrential downpour. The police investigation concluded that her car hydroplaned and the brake system suffered a catastrophic hydraulic failure due to lack of maintenance. My mother blames me. She thinks if I hadn't argued with her, she wouldn't have driven that night."

Grace stepped closer, placing a hand gently over his tense knuckles. "It wasn't your fault, Alexander. You can't control the weather, or a mechanical failure."

Alexander looked down at her hand, his eyes softening. He wrapped his fingers around hers. "Thank you, Grace. For everything."

The Hook: The moment of tenderness was shattered by a sudden, shrill alarm echoing through the house. It wasn't the fire alarm. It was the security alert for the nursery.
