Chapter 2 - The Secret Walk

The next morning, the grand estate felt eerily quiet without Julian’s lingering presence. Alexander sat in his private study, the hidden camera feed playing on the massive wall monitor. He watched Grace enter the nursery.

She didn't know he knew. He wanted to see it with his own eyes, live.

He left the study and walked down the long, carpeted corridor to the nursery. He pushed the door open silently.

Iris was in her blue walker. When she saw Alexander, her little face lit up. "Dada!"

Grace immediately stood up, smoothing her apron, looking anxious. "Mr. Whitmore. I... I can leave if you want private time with the girls."

"No, stay," Alexander said, walking over and kneeling beside Iris. He stroked his daughter's soft hair. "Grace, the doctors in New York told me Iris would likely never walk without a heavy metal brace. They said her nerve pathways were too damaged from the premature birth."

Grace looked down, her lower lip trembling. "Doctors look at charts, sir. They don't see the determination in her eyes. Iris wants to move. She just needed someone to believe she could do it without being afraid of the pain."

"Show me," Alexander commanded gently.

Grace hesitated, then nodded. She knelt five feet away from Iris, just like in the video. She locked eyes with the toddler. "Come on, my brave girl. Show Papa."

Alexander watched, his heart hammering against his ribs. Iris gripped the edges of her walker. Then, with a tiny grunt of effort, she pushed herself forward, letting go of the support entirely.

One step. Two steps. Three steps.

Alexander’s eyes filled with tears he hadn't shed since his wife passed away. On the fourth step, Iris lost her balance. But this time, it wasn't Grace who caught her. Alexander lunged forward, catching his daughter against his chest, holding her tight as she let out a ringing laugh.

"You did it," Alexander whispered into his daughter's hair. He looked up at Grace, his chest aching with a strange, unfamiliar warmth. "How long have you been training her?"

"Two months," Grace said softly. "Every day when Lady Eleanor went out for her afternoon tea. Your mother... she strictly forbade me from taking Iris out of the walker. She said it was dangerous and that a crippled child shouldn't be forced to endure useless pain."

Alexander’s face darkened. "My mother said that?"

"She wants Iris to be sent to a specialized boarding clinic in Switzerland," Grace said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "I overheard her talking to Julian last week. They said a disabled child in the house ruins the Whitmore image. They were planning to convince you to sign the papers by the end of the month."

The Hook: Alexander’s blood turned to ice. The setup with the bracelet wasn't just Julian’s petty jealousy—it was a coordinated strike by his own mother to isolate Iris and eliminate the only person protecting her.
