Chapter 5 - The Midnight Intruder

Alexander and Grace raced up the stairs, their hearts pounding in unison. Alexander pulled a concealed pistol from his study desk as they passed, his face turning into a mask of pure terror.
They burst into the nursery. The window was shattered, glass littering the carpet. Clara was crying in her crib, but Iris’s crib... was completely empty.
"Iris!" Grace screamed, lunging toward the open window that led to the balcony.
Down in the courtyard below, a figure in a black hoodie was carrying a small bundle toward a waiting dark SUV.
"Stay here with Clara!" Alexander ordered, his voice booming with authority as he sprinted down the back staircase.
Grace didn't listen. She couldn't. She ran down after him, her heart tearing in her chest.
By the time they reached the courtyard, the SUV's engine was roaring. Alexander fired two warning shots into the air, but the vehicle sped forward, smashing through the estate’s iron security gates.
"They're taking her!" Grace wept, dropping to her knees on the wet asphalt.
Alexander grabbed his phone, dialing his private security team and the police chief directly. "Track the GPS on Iris’s medical ankle bracelet now! Block every road leading out of Kensington!"
Within ten minutes, the tech team had a ping. The vehicle was heading toward an abandoned warehouse district near the Thames. Alexander didn't wait for the police. He jumped into his own armored SUV, and before he could close the door, Grace slid into the passenger seat.
"Get out, Grace! It's too dangerous!"
"I am not leaving her!" she yelled back, her eyes fierce with a motherly rage that rivaled his own. "She needs me! Drive, Alexander!"

He slammed on the gas, the tires screaming against the pavement.
The Hook: As they sped through the dark London streets, Alexander's phone rang. It was an unknown number. He put it on speaker. A distorted, digital voice filled the car: "If you want the girl back alive, Whitmore, you will transfer 50 million dollars to the offshore account I just texted you. And you will drop all charges against Julian."
