Chapter 2 - The Billionaire’s Counterstrike

The arrival of Victor Blackwood halted the police officers in their tracks. Despite his daughter being in handcuffs, the older billionaire walked into the Whitmore ballroom with the unbothered air of a king entering his court.
"Release my daughter immediately," Victor said, his voice smooth like aged whiskey, yet dripping with venom.
"Victor," Henry snarled, stepping in front of Grace and Noah, shielding them automatically. "Your daughter just confessed to a massive web of human trafficking and identity theft. Your family is finished."
Victor chuckled, a dark, rumbling sound that made the hair on the back of Henry's neck stand up. He raised the digital tablet in his hand, showing a live stock ticker of Whitmore Enterprises. The numbers were plunging in a violent, vertical red line.
"Am I finished, Henry? Or are you?" Victor asked, tilting his head. "Look at the markets. The moment your grandfather started shouting about illegal surrogacy, stolen heirs, and falsified birth certificates, I activated my short-options on your company. If this scandal goes public, if the world finds out that the heir to the Whitmore global empire was born out of an illegal, unregistered medical experiment, your board of directors will depose you by midnight. The Whitmore stock will crash to zero."
Arthur Whitmore stepped forward, his cane slamming against the floor. "We have the original contracts, Victor! We will survive the scandal. You will go to federal prison!"
"Will I?" Victor’s smile widened, revealing capped white teeth. "Open the document your grandfather is holding, Henry. Look at the very last page. Look at the signature under the section labeled 'Primary Beneficiary and Consenting Party'."
Henry snatched the contract from his grandfather’s hands, his eyes flying to the back page. His breath caught in his throat. There, written in elegant, shaky handwriting, was the signature of Eleanor Whitmore. But right beneath it, dated three years ago, was another signature.
Henry Whitmore.
Henry stared at it, his mind exploding into chaos. "This... this is impossible. I never signed this! I didn't even know Grace existed until tonight!"
"You did sign it, Henry," Vivian mocked from between the two police officers, her fear replacing itself with smug malice. "Remember three years ago when Eleanor was in the hospital, and I brought you those endless stacks of medical consent forms, insurance waivers, and power-of-attorney documents while you were drunk on grief and scotch? You signed every single page I put in front of you without reading them."
Victor nodded, folding his arms. "Legally, Henry, you authorized the surrogacy. You authorized the payment to Grace Ellis. And legally, the contract states that if the surrogate ever attempts to claim custody or contact the child, the entire Whitmore estate forfeits 51% of its voting shares to the Blackwood Corporation as a penalty for breach of confidentiality."
The ballroom went completely silent. The trap had been laid three years ago, meticulously planned by the Blackwoods to completely absorb the Whitmore empire. Whether Noah stayed with Henry or went with Grace, the Blackwoods won.
Grace looked at Henry, her face pale. She realized that her love for her son had just been used as a trigger to destroy the man standing before her. "Henry... I didn't know. They told me my baby died. I never received any money! I swear it!"
"I know," Henry murmured, his heart breaking as he saw the terror in her eyes. He looked at Victor. "You planned this from the very beginning. You used my dying wife, you used a desperate mother, and you used my own son as a pawn to steal my company."
"Business is war, Henry," Victor said coldly. "Now, here is my offer. Drop the charges against Vivian. The engagement proceeds tonight. Grace Ellis will be quietly escorted out of the country, and we will announce to the media that she is a disgruntled ex-employee who suffered a mental breakdown. If you agree, I stabilize your stock. If you refuse... you lose your company, your fortune, and because of the legal mess of this contract, the state will place Noah into foster care until a federal custody battle is resolved. Which could take years."
Noah looked up at Henry, his eyes wide and tearful. "Daddy... don't let the mean lady take Mommy."
Henry looked at his son. Then he looked at Grace, whose knuckles were white from holding Noah so tightly. He could feel the eyes of every billionaire in the room waiting for his surrender. A Whitmore never gave up his empire.
Henry closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and opened them. The look in his eyes was no longer that of a businessman. It was the look of a father who had just found his true family.
"Arthur," Henry said to his grandfather. "Call an emergency press conference. Broadcast it live to every major news outlet in the world."
Victor’s smile faltered. "What are you doing, Henry? You'll ruin yourself!"
"No," Henry said, a savage smile touching his lips. "I'm changing the game. I don't give a damn about the stock market, Victor. And I don't give a damn about your contract. You want a war? I’ll give you one." He turned to Grace, his voice softening completely. "Grace, take Noah upstairs to my private quarters. Lock the door. Don't let anyone in but me."
"Henry..." Grace whispered, her heart pounding against her ribs.
"Go," he commanded gently.

As Grace hurried up the grand marble staircase with Noah in her arms, Henry turned back to the crowd, pulling off his black bow tie and tossing it onto the floor. "Ladies and gentlemen, the party is over. But the trial of the century is about to begin."
CRITICAL HOOK TO THE NEXT CHAPTER:As Grace locks herself inside Henry's master suite, she hears a faint, scratching sound coming from inside the walk-in closet. She tightly hugs Noah, stepping backward toward the balcony, only to realize the handles have been chained from the outside. A voice whispers from the dark closet: "Did you really think Henry was the one who pulled the strings, Grace?"
