Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the Closet

Grace’s breath hitched in her throat. She pressed Noah’s head against her chest, her eyes wide with terror as she stared at the heavy oak doors of Henry’s walk-in closet. The scratching sound grew louder, accompanied by a low, mechanical hum.
"Who's there?" Grace demanded, her voice shaking as she backed toward the bed. She glanced at the balcony doors—she could see the heavy iron chains wrapped around the gold handles through the glass. This wasn't a safe haven. It was a trap.
The closet door clicked and slowly swung open.
Stepping out of the darkness was not an assassin or a thug, but a woman dressed in a pristine nurse's uniform. Her face was harsh, lined with age and malice. Grace recognized her instantly. It was Nurse Abigail, the head nurse from the private Blackwood clinic where she had given birth three years ago. The woman who had handed her a fake death certificate and told her that her baby’s heart had stopped beating.
"You," Grace gasped, her blood turning to liquid ice. "You're supposed to be in prison. The clinic was shut down!"
"Shut down by the authorities, yes. But fully funded by the Blackwoods under a different name," Abigail sneered, holding a small silver syringe in her hand. "Did you really think Henry Whitmore was innocent in all this, Grace? You poor, naive girl."
"What do you mean?" Grace’s grip on Noah tightened. Noah began to whimper, sensing the danger.
"Henry wanted an heir, but he didn't want Eleanor to know he was using another woman's body," Abigail lied with a cold, calculated smile. "He was the one who authorized us to tell you the baby died. He didn't want a surrogate tracking him down for child support or causing a scandal in his precious high society. The Blackwoods didn't trick Henry. Henry hired the Blackwoods to clean up his mess. Tonight was just a show to save his reputation because your grandfather found out the truth."
"No... no, that's a lie!" Grace shouted, though a seed of doubt planted itself deeply in her mind. Henry was a billionaire. In the world of the ultra-rich, image was everything. Could he really have been complicit? Could he have looked her in the eye every day for three years while she cleaned his floors, knowing she was the mother of his child, and said nothing?
"Think about it, Grace," Abigail murmured, taking a slow step forward. "He hired you as a housekeeper the exact day the baby arrived. Why? Because he wanted to keep his enemy close. He wanted to watch you, to ensure you never figured it out. And now that you have, he's going to eliminate the problem. This syringe contains a high dose of liquid sedative. You’re going to suffer a sudden, tragic 'overdose' due to the stress of your public breakdown tonight. And Noah will stay with his father, exactly where he belongs."
"Get away from me!" Grace screamed. She swung around, looking for a weapon. She grabbed a heavy crystal vase from the nightstand.
"Daddy! Help!" Noah cried out, his tiny voice piercing the heavy walls of the bedroom.
Abigail lunged forward with surprising speed for her age, her eyes gleaming with psychotic intent. She raised the needle, aiming straight for Grace's neck. Grace swung the crystal vase with all her might. Smash! The vase shattered against Abigail’s shoulder, sending water and shards of glass everywhere. The nurse roared in pain, dropping the syringe, but her hands clamped around Grace’s throat, slamming her down onto the hardwood floor.
Noah tumbled onto the carpet, crying hysterically. "Mommy! Mommy!"
Grace thrashed beneath the nurse, her vision starting to blur as Abigail’s fingers squeezed the air out of her lungs. I can't die, Grace thought frantically. Not now. Not when I finally found my boy.
She reached out blindly with her right hand, her fingers brushing against a jagged piece of the broken crystal vase on the floor. With a final surge of maternal adrenaline, Grace gripped the glass shard and drove it into Abigail’s forearm.
The nurse screamed, releasing her grip on Grace's throat as blood welled from the wound. Grace gasped for air, coughing violently. She scrambled along the floor, grabbed Noah, and dragged herself toward the heavy double doors of the master suite.
She threw the locks open just as Abigail stumbled after her, cursing blindly. Grace burst into the hallway, her uniform torn, her neck bruised, sobbing as she held Noah tight.
Down in the foyer, the press conference had just begun. Flashes of light exploded from dozens of cameras as Henry stood before a wall of microphones. But when he heard the heavy thud and the screams from the upper balcony, he stopped mid-sentence.
He looked up and saw Grace, bleeding and battered, holding Noah at the top of the stairs.

"Henry!" Grace screamed down to the ballroom, her voice echoing over the live news feeds. "The clinic... the nurse... they’re trying to kill us! Did you know? Did you know?!"
CRITICAL HOOK TO THE NEXT CHAPTER:Before Henry can answer, a loud explosion rocks the back of the mansion. The lights instantly cut out, plunging Whitmore House into absolute darkness. In the chaos, a heavy, gloved hand clamps over Grace's mouth from behind, lifting her and Noah into the shadows of the secondary service staircase.
