Chapter 4 - The Midnight Extraction

Darkness was an immediate catalyst for pure chaos. In the grand ballroom below, hundreds of elite guests shrieked, trampling over each other to reach the exits as smoke began to billow from the ventilation shafts. The camera flashes turned into chaotic strobe lights as reporters scrambled for safety.
"Grace!" Henry’s voice boomed through the dark, filled with a raw panic he had never felt in his entire life. He lunged toward the grand staircase, knocking over a microphone stand. "Grace! Stay where you are! I'm coming!"
But at the top of the stairs, Grace couldn't hear him over the roaring of her own blood. The gloved hand over her mouth smelled of chemicals and leather. She tried to bite down, but the grip was unyielding. Noah was ripped from her left arm, his muffled screams dying out as a second attacker wrapped him in a thick, heavy blanket.
"Secure the assets. Move, move, move!" a harsh voice whispered in the dark.
Grace was dragged backward down the narrow, pitch-black service staircase used by the maids. Her feet scraped against the metal steps. She kicked out wildly, hitting one of her captors in the shin, earning herself a brutal blow to the ribs that left her gasping for air.
Within minutes, they were burst through the back exit of the mansion into the cold, pouring rain. A black, unmarked delivery van sat idling in the alleyway, its rear doors wide open.
"Get them inside!"
Grace was thrown onto the metal floor of the van. An instant later, Noah was tossed beside her, still tangled in the blanket. The heavy doors slammed shut, plunging them back into darkness as the van accelerated violently, tires screeching against the wet asphalt.
Grace immediately crawled to Noah, tearing the blanket off his face. "Noah! Are you okay? Are you hurt?"
"Mommy, I'm scared! It's dark!" Noah sobbed, hugging her neck tightly.
"I know, baby, I know. I'm right here. I've got you," Grace whispered, her body trembling with a mixture of terror and fierce protective rage. She looked up through the darkness, her eyes adjusting to the faint glow of the dashboard lights coming through the wire mesh partition separating the cabin from the back.
Sitting in the passenger seat was Victor Blackwood. He turned around, his face illuminated by the green glow of his phone screen.
"You really thought Henry could save you?" Victor sneered, his voice dripping with arrogance. "Henry Whitmore is a boy playing a man's game. He thinks the truth matters. In our world, Grace, only leverage matters."
"Where are you taking us?" Grace demanded, pressing Noah behind her back. "The police know what you did! It was on live television!"
"The police are paid by me, Miss Ellis," Victor laughed. "By tomorrow morning, the media will report that a tragic fire broke out at Whitmore House due to an electrical failure. They will find three bodies in the rubble: Arthur Whitmore, Henry Whitmore, and a humble housekeeper named Grace. Sadly, the young heir, Noah, will have vanished—only to reappear a month from now in Europe under the legal guardianship of his loving stepmother, Vivian Blackwood."
Grace’s heart stopped. "You're going to kill Henry? Your own daughter's fiancé?"
"Henry became useless the moment he chose a maid over billions," Victor said coldly. He turned back to the driver. "Take the old harbor route. The boat is waiting. We clear international waters by dawn."
Inside the van, Grace felt despair threatening to swallow her whole. They were moving at high speed, heading toward the docks. Henry was likely trapped in a burning mansion, or worse. She was completely alone, with no weapons, no money, and a terrified three-year-old child to protect.
She looked down at Noah. His small, tear-stained face looked up at her in the dim light.
No, Grace thought, her jaw tightening. I didn't survive three years of grief just to let them take him again. If I am going to die tonight, I am going to die fighting.
Her fingers searched the floor of the van, feeling around the cold metal. Her hand brushed against something heavy and sharp—a steel tire iron left loose under the bench row. She quietly wrapped her fingers around the freezing metal handle.
Suddenly, the van lurched violently to the left. The sound of a roaring engine echoed from outside, followed by the deafening smash of metal crunching against metal.

The van spun out of control. Grace threw herself over Noah, protecting him with her own body as the vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier, flipping onto its side with a deafening roar.
CRITICAL HOOK TO THE NEXT CHAPTER:As the smoke clears inside the overturned van, the side door is violently ripped off its hinges from the outside with a crowbar. A figure stands silhouetted against the rain and the flashing red lights of a burning sports car. It’s Henry—his face covered in blood and ash, holding a smoking handgun.
