Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Gala

Viral Hook: "He walked into the lions' den wearing a dead man's suit—and he brought the proof."Forty-eight hours later.

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of diamonds, tuxedos, and silk dresses. The annual Lycan International Charity Gala was underway, an event hosting the wealthiest 1% of global elite. The media was outside in droves, reporting on the "tragic penthouse explosion" that Marcus Lycan had supposedly survived by the skin of his teeth. Rumors were flying that Marcus was hiding in an undisclosed medical facility, crippled and broken.

Victoria Lycan stood at the center of the ballroom, holding a flute of vintage champagne, a triumphant smile playing on her lips. She was talking to the Minister of Finance, discussing the smooth transition of power within the Lycan corporate empire.

"With Marcus incapacitated, the board will vote tomorrow to appoint a new CEO," Victoria said smoothly, her eyes glittering behind her designer glasses. "We need stability in these troubled times."

Suddenly, the massive double doors of the ballroom were slammed open.

The chatter in the room ceased instantly. The orchestra stopped playing mid-note.

Walking down the grand staircase was Marcus Lycan. He wasn't in a hospital gown. He was wearing a flawless, custom-tailored black tuxedo. His posture was commanding, his jaw set in stone. But it wasn't his presence that caused a wave of whispers to ripple through the crowd.

It was who he was holding by the hand.

Leo had been transformed. His hair was neatly cut, his face clean, and he wore a miniature version of Marcus's tuxedo. He still looked anxious, his small hand gripping Marcus's fingers with white-knuckle intensity, but his head was held high. In his other hand, he carried a beautifully repaired teddy bear, its spine stitched back together with gold thread.

Victoria’s champagne glass slipped through her fingers, smashing loudly on the polished floor. The dark purple liquid splashed across her silver gown like a stain of blood.

Marcus walked directly toward the stage at the front of the room, ignoring the gasps and the flashing cameras of the elite guests. He grabbed the microphone from the podium.

"Ladies and gentlemen, members of the board," Marcus’s voice boomed through the speakers. "Five years ago, we were told that my brother Julian and his family died in a tragic accident. We were told the Lycan lineage had narrowed down to me alone."

He brought Leo up to stand on a chair next to him.

"This is Julian Lycan Jr. He was stolen from his crib. He was kept in a basement, fed scraps, and hidden from the world so that a faction within my own company could manipulate our stock and prepare for a hostile takeover. Two days ago, this boy escaped his captors. He ran into a restaurant and saved my life from a lethal dose of aconite."

The ballroom erupted into chaos. Journalists pressed against the security lines, shouting questions.

Victoria stepped forward, her face twisted in a mask of righteous indignation. "Marcus! You have lost your mind! The trauma of the penthouse attack has broken your psyche! This is a random street orphan you are using for a publicity stunt! Security, remove this madman and the child!"

"I wouldn't do that, Victoria," Marcus said calmly. He signaled to the massive projector screen behind him.

The screen flashed to life, displaying certified DNA documents from three separate independent laboratories, followed by a live video feed of a luxury estate upstate. The video showed federal agents raiding a hidden underground bunker beneath a mansion registered under a shell company owned directly by... Victoria Lycan.

"The police just found the chemical lab where my salmon was poisoned, Auntie," Marcus said, his eyes drilling into hers. "And they found the nanny who was paid to keep Leo locked away."

Victoria backed away, her face turning gray as four FBI agents in trench coats stepped out from the crowd, handcuffs ready. But as they closed in on her, she began to laugh. A wicked, hysterical sound that echoed through the silent ballroom.

"You think you won, Marcus?" Victoria sneered, spit flying from her lips as the agents grabbed her arms. "You think I am the mastermind? I am just a middleman! You have no idea who actually signed your brother’s death warrant!"
