Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Betrayal

Viral Hook: "The villain wasn't the aunt. It was the voice on the recording from five years ago."The fallout from the gala was catastrophic. Lycan International stock plummeted 20% overnight, but Marcus didn't care about the money. He had relocated Leo to a highly classified, military-grade safehouse in the mountains of Montana.
Victoria was locked in a maximum-security federal holding cell, refusing to speak to anyone but her lawyers. However, Marcus’s intelligence network had recovered a encrypted hard drive from her raided estate.
Inside the safehouse’s study, Marcus sat with Vance, watching the digital decryption bar on his laptop slowly creep toward 100%. Leo was sleeping peacefully on a nearby couch, wrapped in a warm wool blanket, his teddy bear tucked under his arm. For the first time in five years, the boy looked safe.
"If Victoria wasn't the head of the snake, who is?" Vance asked, cleaning his sidearm. "We checked every board member. None of them have the tactical capability to launch an assault like the penthouse raid."
Ping.
The decryption finished. A single audio file appeared on the screen, dated July 14, 2021—the exact night of the fire that supposedly killed Julian.
Marcus clicked play.
A crackling voice filled the room. It was Victoria. "The child is secured. The house is burning. Julian and Elena are inside. It is done."
Then, a second voice replied. A deep, familiar voice that made Marcus's heart stop. A voice he had trusted more than his own shadow.
"Good. Make sure the coroner gets the pre-arranged ash samples. Marcus must believe they are all dead. If he thinks he’s the last Lycan left, he will push the expansion aggressive enough to double our net worth. Then, when the time is right, we eliminate Marcus, bring the boy out as a puppet heir, and take total control."
Marcus stared at the screen, his breath catching in his throat.
The second voice belonged to Dr. Harrison. His personal physician. The man who had treated his family for two decades. The man who had "verified" the DNA results just days ago.
Marcus suddenly realized why Harrison’s hands had been shaking. It wasn't fear of the situation—it was fear of discovery. And Harrison had full access to the safehouse's medical supply logistics.
Before Marcus could scream a warning, the lights in the Montana safehouse died.
The heavy scent of aerosolized gas began pouring through the ventilation vents.
"Vance! Gas masks!" Marcus yelled, coughing violently as a sweet, sickening vapor filled his lungs. He lunged toward the couch to grab Leo, but his limbs felt like lead. The neurotoxin was fast-acting.

The heavy oak door of the study swung open. Dr. Harrison walked in, wearing a sleek, tactical respirator. Behind him were three new mercenaries.
"I really hoped you would just eat the salmon, Marcus," Harrison said, his voice muffled by the mask, his eyes cold and devoid of any human emotion. "It would have been so much cleaner."
