Chapter 6 - The Lullaby of Revenge

Viral Hook: "The billionaire fell to his knees. But the seven-year-old boy remembered the final trigger."Marcus fell to his knees, his vision blurring into a haze of gray and black. He watched helplessly as a mercenary picked up the unconscious Leo from the couch.
"Why, Harrison?" Marcus choked out, blood leaking from his nose as the gas paralyzed his nervous system. "My family... treated you like blood."
"That’s the problem with billionaires," Harrison sneered, walking over and kicking Marcus’s sidearm away. "You think loyalty can be bought with a salary. Julian found out I was skimming billions from the offshore accounts to fund my own pharmaceutical empire. He was going to ruin me. So, I built a plan to own your entire legacy. Victoria was weak; she wanted the title. I wanted the power."
Harrison looked down at Leo, who was stirring slightly in the mercenary's arms. "And now, this little mistake will finally fulfill his purpose. He will be the traumatized, sole survivor who 'inherits' everything under my legal guardianship. Goodbye, Marcus."
Harrison turned his back, signaling his men to carry Leo out to a waiting helicopter on the lawn.
But Harrison forgot one critical detail. He forgot about the boy's teddy bear.
As the mercenary carried Leo past Marcus, the boy’s weak, small hand accidentally squeezed the rusted music box hidden inside the golden-stitched stuffed animal.
The distorted, metallic lullaby began to echo through the room. Plink... plink... plonk...
To Harrison, it was just a broken toy. But to Marcus, that specific melody triggered a memory from his childhood—a secret backup protocol built into the safehouse by his grandfather, a paranoid war veteran. The house’s AI smart-system was programmed to recognize that exact frequency as a duress signal if the primary power was cut.
A mechanical voice broadcasted from the ceiling walls: "DU_RESS CODE ACCEPTED. TOTAL SANCTUARY LOCKDOWN INITIATED."
Before Harrison could react, heavy steel blast shutters dropped from the ceilings, slamming down with thunderous force, sealing the doors and windows. The room was completely cut off from the outside world. The ventilation system violently reversed, sucking the toxic gas out of the room and pumping in pure oxygen.
Marcus inhaled deeply, the fresh air rapidly clearing his mind. The paralysis faded. Fueled by raw, primal adrenaline, Marcus exploded off the floor like a launched missile.
He tackled the mercenary holding Leo, slamming the man’s head into the brick fireplace, knocking him out cold. Vance, who had managed to hold his breath, lunged at the other two mercenaries with a combat knife, neutralizing them in a flurry of brutal, close-quarters combat.
Dr. Harrison panicked. He pulled a compact pistol from his coat, aiming it directly at Leo, who was now crying on the floor. "Don't move! I'll kill him right now!"
"You don't have the guts, Harrison," Marcus growled, stepping in front of his nephew, his body acting as a human shield. "You're a thief in a white coat. You aren't a killer."
"Try me!" Harrison screamed, his finger tightening on the trigger.
BANG!
A gunshot echoed through the room. But Harrison didn't fire.
He stared down at his chest in shock. A single, perfect bullet hole bloomed on his shirt. He stumbled backward, dropping his gun, and fell through the shattered glass of the display cabinet, sliding down to the floor, dead before he hit the ground.
Standing in the doorway of the hidden emergency tunnel was a figure wrapped in a heavy tactical coat, holding a smoking pistol.
Marcus blinked, unable to believe his eyes. The figure lowered their hood.
It was Elena. Julian’s wife. Leo’s mother.
Her face was scarred from burns, her eyes hardened by years of hiding in the shadows.
"Elena?" Marcus gasped, his voice cracking. "You... you're alive?"
"I've been hunting Harrison for five years, Marcus," Elena said, her voice trembling as she dropped the gun and fell to her knees, opening her arms. "I couldn't get to Julian in time... but I followed the trail. I knew Harrison would try to finish the job."
Leo looked up. He stared at the scarred face of the woman. The memories of his first two years of life rushed back. "Mommy?"
The little boy broke away from Marcus and ran into his mother’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably. Elena held him as if she would never let go, burying her face in his clean hair, weeping tears of raw, agonizing relief.
Marcus stood over them, looking at his fractured, broken family finally coming back together. The Lycan Empire was shattered, the stock was in ruins, and their enemies were dead or behind bars. But as he looked at the little boy who had screamed across a luxury restaurant just three days ago, Marcus smiled for the first time in five years.
