Chapter 2 - THE BILLIONAIRE’S SIN

Hook: The savior who slept on her floor was the world’s most dangerous target. The explosion was blinding. White light and a deafening roar wiped out Amelia's senses. Coughing through thick, acrid smoke, her survival instincts from Atlanta kicked in. She didn't scream. She grabbed the fire poker, crawled through the broken glass under the kitchen table, and scrambled out the back door into the freezing night.
Footsteps crunched heavily on the snow out front. Flashlights cut through the darkness.
"Clear the house! Find the girl and the card!" a voice shouted. It was the scarred man from the diner.
Amelia didn't look back. She sprinted into the dense woods, the freezing snow biting at her bare ankles. She ran until her lungs burned, guided only by the faint blue glow of the black card still clutched in her hand. The text on the card changed: HEAD TO THE OLD MILL. 1.2 MILES NORTH.
How did the card know where she was? How did it know the geography of her mountain? She had no choice but to trust it.
Forty minutes later, shivering violently and on the verge of hypothermia, Amelia reached the abandoned timber mill. The structure was a skeletal ruin of rusted metal and rotting wood.
"Julian?" she called out, her voice cracking.
A hand clamped over her mouth from behind. Amelia violently threw her elbow backward, hitting solid muscle.
"It's me. It's me, Amelia. Stop," a voice hissed.
She turned around. Julian stood in the shadows, wearing tactical gear, looking entirely different from the desperate father who had begged for shelter. His gray eyes were hyper-alert, devoid of the warmth she had seen days prior. Behind him, inside a hidden, heated container unit disguised as an old generator shed, Ella was sleeping soundly, wrapped in a thermal blanket.
"You brought them to my home!" Amelia yelled in a harsh whisper, shoving his chest. "Who are those men? Why are they trying to kill me?"
Julian caught her wrists gently but firmly. "I am sorry, Amelia. I never intended for them to track my signature to your cabin. I thought the storm would mask our heat trail."
"Who are you, Julian?"
Julian sighed, letting go of her hands. He ran a hand through his dark, messy hair. "My full name is Julian Thorne. I am the CEO of Thorne Cybernetics. Three weeks ago, my company perfected a decentralized global encryption protocol. It controls the security grids for every major central bank and government intelligence agency in the western world."
Amelia stared at him, stunned. "You're a tech mogul."
"I was," Julian corrected bitterly. "Until my stepbrother, Marcus, decided he wanted the empire for himself. He staged a coup, framed me for corporate espionage, and hired a private mercenary group called The Vanguard to eliminate me and Ella. The card I left you contains the master decryption key. It's the only thing keeping Marcus from seizing absolute control of the global financial market. If he gets it, he doesn't just ruin me—he controls the world's data."
Amelia looked at the card in her hand. "And you left this with me? A stranger?"
"Because you were the only person in three years who didn't want anything from me," Julian said softly, his stoic facade cracking. "You protected my daughter when you had every reason to lock us out. I thought you would be safe if I drew them away."
Suddenly, the red warning lights on Julian's portable radar screen flashed violently.

"They bypassed the perimeter sensors," Julian whispered, his face turning pale. "Marcus's men are already here."
From the darkness outside the mill, a loudspeaker boomed: "Julian! Come out with the key, or we burn the mill down with the girl inside!"
