Chapter 4 - HUNTED IN THE SNOW

Hook: The cold can kill you, but secrets kill faster. The snow cushioned their fall as Amelia and Ella tumbled down the steep ravine. Bullets shredded the pine branches above them. Amelia scraped her face against a sharp rock, but she barely felt the pain through the sheer rush of adrenaline.
"Come on!" Amelia gasped, pulling Ella up. They entered a dense thicket of thorns where the SUV couldn't follow.
Behind them, they could hear the shouting of Marcus’s mercenaries descending the ridge. They were trapped between an elite hit squad and a freezing wilderness.
"Amelia, I'm cold," Ella whimpered, her teeth chattering violently. The fever from two nights ago was threatening to return under the extreme stress and freezing temperatures.
Amelia pulled off her own heavy woolen jacket and wrapped it tightly around the little girl, leaving herself in just a thin flannel shirt. "I know, baby. I know. We just have to keep moving."
The black card in Amelia’s pocket pulsed again. She pulled it out. The display showed a real-time thermal map of the forest. Three red dots were closing in on their position from the west, but a blue dot was moving incredibly fast from the east.
Julian. He was alive.
The card text read: CAVE SECTOR 4. HARBOR THERE.
Amelia followed the digital map, her limbs growing numb, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The cold was a heavy weight pressing down on her chest. Just as her vision began to blur, she spotted the narrow opening of a limestone cave hidden behind a frozen waterfall.
She dragged Ella inside the cave, collapsing onto the rocky floor. They were temporarily hidden, but the cold inside was just as lethal. Amelia held Ella close, trying to share her remaining body heat, her own consciousness slipping away.
Footsteps echoed outside the cave. The ice of the waterfall shattered.
Amelia raised the pistol with her last ounce of strength, her fingers too numb to pull the trigger.
A figure blocked the moonlight. "Amelia!"
It was Julian. His tactical vest was torn, and blood dripped from a deep cut on his temple, but his eyes were wild with desperation. He dropped to his knees, wrapping his massive arms around both of them. He pulled a thermal emergency blanket from his pack, enveloping them.
"I've got you. I'm here," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion he couldn't hide. He pressed his forehead against Amelia's frozen cheek. "You stayed with her. You protected her."
"Marcus..." Amelia managed to whisper. "He has the highway blocked."

"Marcus thinks he has won," Julian said, his jaw tightening as he looked at the black card in Amelia’s hand. "But he made a fatal mistake. He came here personally. The encryption key isn't just a drive, Amelia. It's a trap. If I upload the final sequence from this mountain's broadcast tower, it won't just lock Marcus out—it will expose his entire criminal network to Interpol in real-time."
Julian looked at her, his gray eyes burning with fierce determination. "But I need your help to reach the tower. I can't do this alone."
