Chapter 5 - THE FINAL STAND AT THE RIDGE

Hook: A poor girl with a fire poker against a billionaire’s army. The broadcast tower sat atop the highest ridge of the mountain, a skeletal metal spire cutting into the gray dawn sky. The storm had passed, leaving behind an eerie, blindingly white landscape.

Julian had hidden Ella safely in the deep recesses of the cave with enough supplies for twenty-four hours. Now, it was just him and Amelia. She had refused to stay behind. "You fixed my door, Thorne," she told him. "I'm finishing this with you."

They reached the perimeter fence of the tower facility just as the sun broke over the horizon. But Marcus was already waiting. He stood inside the glass control booth at the base of the tower, surrounded by the remaining four heavily armed Vanguard mercenaries.

The scarred man from the diner was standing right beside him.

"Julian!" Marcus's voice amplified through the tower's outdoor PA system. "I knew you'd come to play hero. Walk into the courtyard with the card, or my men will hunt down the little girl. We found the cave tracks, Julian. It's over."

Amelia looked at Julian. He looked calm, but the vein in his jaw was throbbing.

"We do the diversion now," Julian whispered to her. He handed her a remote detonator. "When I reach the main breaker, blow the auxiliary generator. It will drop their night-vision and thermal tracking scopes for sixty seconds."

Julian stepped out into the open courtyard, his hands raised, the black card held high between his fingers. "Marcus! Let's end this between us. Leave the girl out of it!"

"Kill him and take the card," Marcus ordered coldly over the radio.

The mercenaries advanced.

NOW, Julian’s voice echoed in Amelia's earpiece.

Amelia slammed her thumb onto the detonator button. The auxiliary generator exploded in a spectacular ball of orange flame and black smoke. The power grid of the tower failed instantly, plunging the control booth into darkness.

Julian moved with lethal, terrifying speed. He dropped the first two mercenaries before they could even adjust their blinded visors.

Amelia didn't stay hidden. She ran toward the backup power terminal as planned to manually override the tower's satellite uplink so Julian could upload the file. But as she reached the console, a heavy hand grabbed her hair and slammed her against the metal wall.

It was the scarred man.

"You've been a major pain in my neck, sweetheart," he snarled, raising a tactical knife.

Amelia choked, her hands scrambling against the console. Her fingers closed around a heavy, rusted metal wrench left behind by maintenance workers. With a scream of pure survival fury, she swung it upward, catching the man squarely in the jaw. He stumbled back, stunned. She swung again, knocking the knife from his hand, before throwing her weight into the master uplink switch.

The satellite dish above them groaned, turning toward the sky.

"Julian! The uplink is live!" she screamed.

Across the courtyard, Julian threw the black card into the main console reader. "Data transfer initiated," the automated system chimed.

Marcus burst out of the control booth, a madness in his eyes, aiming a chrome pistol directly at Julian's back. "If I lose the empire, you lose your life!"

"Julian, look out!" Amelia yelled, sprinting across the snow.
