Chapter 3 - THE HIGH-STAKES BETRAYAL

Hook: Blood is thicker than water, but cheaper than billions."We have to split up," Julian said, his voice dropping into a commanding, lethal tone. He grabbed a compact submachine gun from a crate and handed Amelia a small, sleek silver pistol.

"I don't shoot people," Amelia stammered, backing away.

"You won't have to unless it's a choice between your life and theirs," Julian said, looking her dead in the eye. "Take Ella through the old drainage tunnel behind the generator. It leads to the highway. I'll draw them to the upper levels."

"Julian, no—"

"Amelia, please. Keep my daughter safe."

Before she could protest, Julian sprinted out of the container, firing a volley of suppressive shots into the rafters. The mill erupted into chaos. Gunfire echoed like thunder, sparks flying as bullets tore through ancient machinery.

Amelia grabbed a wide-eyed, terrified Ella. "Hold onto me, sweetie. Don't look back."

They crawled into the damp, narrow concrete drainage pipe. The sound of gunfire grew distant, replaced by the rushing water beneath them. Amelia's heart pounded against her ribs. She was just a diner waitress trying to escape a painful past, and now she was protecting the heiress to a multi-billion-dollar empire.

They emerged near the snow-covered highway after fifteen agonizing minutes. But there was no rescue waiting. A sleek, black armored SUV sat idling by the tree line.

The door opened, and a man stepped out. He looked remarkably like Julian, but his eyes were cruel, his tailored suit completely out of place in the wilderness. It was Marcus Thorne.

"Well, well," Marcus smiled, clapping his hands softly. "Look what the storm dragged out. The white knight's little stray."

Amelia pulled Ella behind her back, aiming the silver pistol with trembling hands. "Stay back."

Marcus chuckled, completely unbothered by the weapon. "Do you even know how to take the safety off that thing, darling? Let's make a deal. Give me the child, give me the black card, and I will write you a check for ten million dollars. You can leave this trashy mountain. You can buy a new life anywhere in the world. No more abusive exes in Atlanta, no more scrubbing tables. Total freedom."

Amelia froze. How did he know about Atlanta?

"Oh, I know everything about you, Amelia," Marcus purred, taking a step forward. "Julian thinks he's a savior, but he brought death to your door. I'm offering you life. Ten million dollars. What is a stranger's kid worth to you anyway?"

Ella clutched Amelia's jacket, crying softly. "Amelia..."

Amelia looked from Marcus's mocking smile to the terrified child behind her. The memory of her grandmother's quilt flashed through her mind—beautiful things shouldn't be left unused. Goodness shouldn't be hidden away out of fear.

"You're right," Amelia said, lowering the gun slightly. "I'm just a poor girl from the mountains."

Marcus grinned, extending his hand. "Smart girl."

Amelia raised the gun instantly and fired straight at the SUV's front tire. The loud BANG echoed through the canyon as the tire blew out. At the same moment, she grabbed Ella and dived down the steep, snowy embankment beside the highway just as Marcus’s bodyguards opened fire.
