Chapter 1 - THE HUNTER BECOMES THE PREYThe black SUV behind us swerved violently, tires screaming as it slammed into the rear bumper of our car. The impact threw me against Matthew’s shoulder. He didn't flinch. Instead, he pulled a small, sleek device from his inner pocket and tapped a command.

"Driver, engage the E-diff. Take the service path through the quarry," Matthew commanded, his voice as calm as if he were ordering coffee.
The driver spun the wheel, and we veered off the asphalt into the mud. Our vehicle accelerated with terrifying speed, leaving the other SUV to flounder in the loose gravel. Matthew turned his gaze back to me. His eyes were not warm; they were obsidian—deep, cold, and calculating.
"Diane Vance," Matthew said, the name sounding like a death sentence. "She’s been leveraging her business debts against the Carter Group’s subsidiaries for three years. So, it wasn't just your beauty she was trading tonight, Emily. It was my company’s contracts."

"You were the bait," he replied, his voice dropping an octave. "And now that she’s missed her shot, she’s going to do everything in her power to ensure you never make it to sunrise."
