Chapter 8 - THE PRICE OF FREEDOM"You're just like her," I spat, trembling. "You just want to own me."

Matthew stepped closer, his hand reaching out to touch my cheek—the same spot Diane had bruised. I flinched, and he froze, a flash of genuine pain crossing his face.

"I didn't study you to own you," he said softly. "I studied you because I couldn't understand why a girl who had been broken so many times still had the courage to fight back. I’m not your enemy, Emily. But if you want to leave, I won't stop you."

He opened the door. I walked out, barefoot again, into the night.
