Chapter 2 - THE FORTRESSWhen we arrived at the Carter Estate, it looked less like a home and more like a fortress. Armed guards stood at the iron gates, and the perimeter was lined with thermal sensors.
Matthew led me inside, his hand firmly, possessively at the small of my back. He brought me to a sprawling, minimalist master suite that felt like a gilded cage.
"You are safe here," he said, handing me a glass of water. "But you do not leave this room. Diane has eyes everywhere, even in the police department."

"Why help me?" I asked, looking up at him.
He paused at the door, his silhouette cast long and dark against the hallway lights. "Because Diane Vance made the mistake of thinking I could be cheated. I don't just want her company, Emily. I want her legacy erased."
