Chapter 6 - The Shadow QueenWithin three months, the underworld and corporate boardrooms of Bellhaven underwent a seismic, terrifying shift.

The waitress from the Riverside Diner was no longer serving coffee.

Now known simply as "Miss Mercer" or "The Shadow Queen" in hushed whispers across the city's elite circles, Grace sat at the right hand of Dominic Rourke. She restructured his real estate holdings, purged the remaining corrupt lieutenants from his payroll, and streamlined his legitimate businesses into an impenetrable financial fortress.

With every corrupt official exposed and every embezzled dollar recovered, Dominic’s empire grew richer, tighter, and more powerful than ever before.

And Dominic kept his word.

Eleanor Mercer’s experimental gene therapy was an overwhelming success. By February, her mother was breathing on her own, walking through their newly renovated, rent-paid townhouse in an upscale Bellhaven neighborhood, and smiling for the first time in years.

Grace had everything she had ever dreamed of—financial security, her mother’s health, and absolute power.

Yet, something inside her was changing.

Late one night in the penthouse, working under the glow of a single desk lamp while Dominic poured bourbon at the wet bar, Grace looked up from a stack of shipping manifests.

"You're quiet tonight, Dominic," she noted.

Dominic turned, swirling the amber liquid in his crystal glass. He walked over and placed it gently on her desk, sitting on the edge of the mahogany wood.

"I was thinking about the day you threw that coffee pot, Grace," Dominic said quietly. "You walked into my life like a storm, ready to burn everything down just to protect a stranger kid with an inhaler."

"I was desperate," Grace replied softly.

"No," Dominic corrected, looking deeply into her eyes. "You were fearless. And now... look at you. You wear tailored suits. You command men twice your age. You control half the wealth in Pennsylvania. Do you ever look in the mirror, Grace, and wonder who is staring back?"

Grace fell silent. She looked down at her hands—hands that used to scrub diner counters and wash dishes, now signing orders that could crush million-dollar corporations.

Before she could answer, the secure emergency phone on Dominic’s desk buzzed shrilly.

Dominic picked up the receiver. As he listened, the color slowly drained from his face—a rare, terrifying sight for a man who had never shown fear in his life.

"I understand," Dominic said tightly, and hung up.

"What is it?" Grace asked, standing up.

"That was Captain Miller from the State Police," Dominic said, his voice dangerously low. "Federal prosecutors just unsealed a massive federal RICO indictment against Rourke Holdings. And the informant who handed over the decrypted master ledger... wasn't one of my lieutenants."

Grace’s breath caught in her throat. "Who was it?"

Dominic looked straight at her, a bitter, ironic smile twisting his lips.

"It was Marcus Vance. My chief legal counsel. The man you recommended we promote two months ago."
