Chapter 8 - Behind Prison WallsThe federal holding facility in downtown Philadelphia was a sterile labyrinth of reinforced concrete, fluorescent hums, and absolute despair.

Grace sat on the edge of a steel cot in solitary confinement, staring at the gray cinder-block wall across from her.

Three weeks had passed since the raid on Rourke Tower.

Her mother’s medical fund had been seized by federal asset forfeiture. The townhouse was gone. The car was impounded. Everything she had fought for, bled for, and compromised her soul for had vanished in a single afternoon.

Worst of all, she had played right into the hands of the federal government, serving as the unwitting architect of Dominic Rourke’s legal destruction.

The heavy steel door of her cell rattled. A guard slid a small slot open and tossed in a folded newspaper.

Grace picked it up. The bold front-page headline screamed across the paper:

"EMPIRE FALLS: THE WAITRESS WHO BUILT—AND DESTROYED—THE ROURKE CRIME SYNDICATE."

Below the headline was a photo of her handcuffed, being led out of Rourke Tower by federal agents, flanked by Marcus Vance—now smiling freely in a sharp suit as a cooperating government witness.

Grace closed her eyes, hot tears spilling down her cheeks. She had wanted to save her family, to escape the crushing weight of poverty. Instead, she had destroyed the only king Bellhaven had ever known, and in doing so, destroyed herself.

Later that evening, during the restricted recreation hour, Grace was led into the concrete courtyard.

Standing near the far fence, dressed in standard orange institutional garb, was Dominic Rourke.

Despite being stripped of his billions, his suits, and his empire, Dominic still carried himself with the posture of a king. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his eyes were as sharp and unyielding as flint.

Grace walked over, stopping a few feet away, her head bowed in shame.

"I'm sorry, Dominic," she whispered, her voice breaking. "I trusted Vance. I let him slip right past us. I destroyed everything you built."

Dominic turned slowly, looking at her with an expression that shocked her to her core.

He wasn't angry.

He was smiling.

May you like

A slow, terrifying, triumphant smile that sent a shiva down Grace’s spine.

"You didn't destroy my kingdom, Grace," Dominic murmured softly, leaning against the chain-link fence. "You just revealed it."
