Chapter 4 - The Vault of ShadowsThe west wing of the Vance estate smelled of cold stone, old dust, and something else—something metallic and sharp, like copper.

Marcus slid the heavy brass key into the ornate iron lock of the double doors. With a dry, agonizing groan, the bolt gave way. The door swung inward, revealing a pitch-black corridor that seemed to swallow the beam of Marcus’s flashlight.

"Stay close to me," Marcus murmured, his grip tightening around Leo’s small hand as they stepped across the threshold.

The flashlight beam swept across the walls. To their shock, this wasn't an abandoned, dusty attic. It was a modern, high-security operations room disguised behind a historic facade. Lined against the stone walls were rows of high-end computer servers humming quietly, multiple monitors glowing in standby mode, and filing cabinets labeled with code names and foreign bank accounts.

"She had a whole office down here," Leo whispered, awe and fear warring in his voice.

Marcus walked past the servers toward a heavy steel safe built directly into the ancient brick wall. The digital keypad flickered with a blue light. He didn't know the combination, but as his eyes scanned the desk nearby, he noticed a framed photograph resting face down.

He picked it up. It was a picture of Elena smiling brightly, standing right beside a man Marcus had never seen before—a tall, heavily tattooed figure with a scar running across his left cheek. On the back of the photo, written in hurried handwriting, was a series of numbers and a chilling note: ‘If anything happens to Marcus, transfer the primary offshore holdings to the Swiss account. The drowning was clean; nobody will ever look twice at a grieving widow.’

Marcus stopped breathing. The glass frame slipped from his fingers, shattering loudly against the stone floor.

‘The drowning was clean.’

His wife’s death wasn't an accident. Elena hadn't just been smuggling blood diamonds; she had murdered Sarah to get to him, to take control of his multi-billion-dollar shipping conglomerate, and to position herself as the undisputed queen of his estate.

Before Marcus could process the suffocating wave of rage and guilt, the computer monitors across the room suddenly flickered to life. The screens flashed from standby mode to a live video feed from the mansion's exterior security cameras.

A black, unmarked van had just pulled up right outside the front gates. Three masked figures stepped out, armed with heavy-duty bolt cutters and tactical weapons.

And on the bottom corner of the monitor, a text prompt blinked in neon green: [REMOTE UPLOAD COMPLETE. EMERGENCY PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.]

Marcus’s blood turned to ice. Elena hadn't just left behind a hidden office. She had left behind a trap.
