Chapter 8 - The Breaking Point

The aftermath of the raid brought a fragile, tense calm to the estate. Carmine had received his message: the Costa family was untouchable, and Nora Hayes was no captive—she was the queen of the fortress.
That night, after the kids were safely asleep in the panic room turned permanent bedrooms, Arthur knocked softly on the door to Nora's suite in the west wing.
She opened it wearing a silk robe, her dark hair falling loose over her shoulders. She looked tired, but unbreakable.
"The children are asleep," Arthur said, standing in the doorway. He looked different tonight—older, more vulnerable, stripped of the armor he wore to face the syndicate. "Dante asked if you were going to stay forever."
Nora leaned against the doorframe. "Depends. Are you going to keep treating me like a business contract, Arthur?"
Arthur stepped closer, invading her space, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that made the air between them feel electric. "It stopped being a contract three months ago, Nora. The moment you held Chloe through the night. The moment you picked up a shotgun to protect my home."
"I protected my home," Nora corrected softly.
Arthur reached out, his large, calloused hand gently cupping her cheek. His thumb brushed over her cheekbone, a gesture so tender it felt foreign in their brutal world. "I didn't buy you to be a babysitter, Nora. I bought you because I was desperate. But I fell in love with you because you are the strongest, fiercest woman I have ever known."
Nora’s breath hitched. For twenty-six years, she had been told she was defective. Broken. A bad investment. A motel with flickering neon signs. And here, standing in the dark corridors of a mafia stronghold, a terrifying warlord was looking at her like she was the only light in the world.

She leaned into his touch, her eyes closing. "I can't give you children, Arthur. You know that. The medical reports—"
"I don't give a damn about children," Arthur interrupted fiercely, pressing his forehead against hers. "I have four. I have a family. What I didn't have was a partner. A wife. Someone who stands beside me in the fire. I don't want your DNA, Nora. I want you."
