Chapter 1 - Waking the Vault

"They're untouchable down here, boss," Marcus said, his voice dropping an octave as the old instincts flooded back. "Cole's old man owns half the concrete suppliers in the tri-state area. Hale's mother sits on the federal oversight committee for regional law enforcement. And the Whitmore trust? They practically funded the district attorney’s last three campaigns. The local cops already classified Lily's case as a 'unresolved campus altercation due to insufficient evidence.'"
"Insufficient evidence," I repeated, the words tasting like ash. "They didn't just break her jaw, Marcus. They shattered her face because she turned down an advance from Ethan Cole at a campus mixer. My daughter has metal plates in her mouth right now, and those boys are currently sitting in a private booth at the Obsidian Club drinking vintage scotch, laughing about how her ordinary father won't even be able to afford a lawyer."
"Give me forty-eight hours," Marcus replied, his tone shifting into the cold, surgical cadence I used to rely on when entire syndicates needed to be dismantled before dawn. "We still have the safety deposit boxes in Zurich, the dormant shell corporations in the Caymans, and three federal judges who owe their careers to favors we called in before you vanished. Shall I start with their finances or their freedom?"
"Neither," I said, looking through the glass at Lily as a nurse adjusted her IV drip. "Start with their fear. Make them realize that the money protecting them is just paper waiting to be burned."

I hung up, pocketed the phone, and walked back into the sterile hospital room. Lily stirred, her swollen eyes flickering open. She couldn't speak, but her hand reached out blindly across the sheets. I caught her trembling fingers, pressing them against my palm.
"Sleep, sweetheart," I whispered, feeling the cold steel of resolve settle deep into my bones. "Daddy has some business to attend to. And this time, nobody walks away."
