Chapter 19 - The Final Ledger Closed

Later that afternoon, after Lily had left for campus, I walked back down into the basement safe. The heavy steel door stood wide open, the room illuminated by a single overhead bulb.
On the metal work table sat the thick, leather-bound ledger book I had opened months ago.
I picked up a heavy black marker, opened the book to the very first page where my old syndicate name was written in bold, jagged ink from a lifetime ago, and drew a thick, permanent line straight through it.
The ghost had returned, waged a silent war across a city built on corruption, and reclaimed his peace. But the ghost didn't belong here anymore. Only Daniel Walker did.

I closed the cover, tossed the ledger into an industrial incinerator standing in the corner of the room, and watched as the orange flames roared to life, consuming the last physical trace of a forgotten empire until there was nothing left but fine, weightless ash.
I turned off the basement light, locked the steel door behind me, and walked back up the stairs into the sunlight.
