The basement safe remained locked behind three inches of reinforced steel, but the air inside smelled of dust and old paper. Marcus unrolled a fresh sheet of tissue-thin tracking logs across the metal table while I adjusted the brass lamp overhead.

"The federal auctions concluded this morning," Marcus said, tracing a finger down a column of seized assets. "Cole’s former industrial holdings were bought out by an anonymous consortium. On paper, it looks like a clean corporate takeover by an out-of-state holding firm."

I looked closer at the acquisition code stamped at the bottom of the manifest. A faint, stylized watermark shaped like a broken anchor sat in the margin—a signature I hadn't seen since the Atlantic shipping wars of the late nineties.

"Who runs the holding firm?" I asked, my voice dropping into that flat, quiet register that usually made even my closest lieutenants check their exits.

"On the surface, a group of institutional investors out of Zurich," Marcus replied, glancing up. "Beneath the surface? It's our old Swiss trust. The one we liquidated to fund Lily's future. The accounts weren't just transferred, boss. They were weaponized. We didn't just take their money—we bought the very dirt their mansions were built on."

I stared at the watermark, realizing the chessboard hadn't been cleared; it had simply been inherited.
