Chapter 18 - The Normal Life

The kitchen was warm and smelled of toasted sourdough when I walked through the back door. Lily was sitting at the island, her laptop open, scrolling through architectural design sketches for her upcoming semester project. The faint silver scar along her jaw was barely visible now, catching the morning light as she looked up with a bright, easy smile.
"Morning, Dad," she said, closing her laptop and stretching her arms. "You look like you've been up all night."
"Just had some early inventory to review down at the import shop," I lied smoothly, pulling a white ceramic mug from the cabinet and pouring her coffee. "How's the project coming along?"
"It's great," Lily grinned, taking the mug from my hands and wrapping her fingers around the warm ceramic. "Marcus sent over those architectural textbooks I wanted, too. Though I still don't understand how someone as quiet as you managed to get shipping manifests approved by the city council so fast."
I paused, leaning against the counter, looking at my daughter—unafraid, unbroken, and completely safe in the world I had fought twice to protect.
"Sometimes, sweetheart, people just need to realize that cooperation is much easier than resistance," I said softly.

Lily laughed, taking a sip of her coffee. "Well, whatever you did, thank you for always having my back, Dad."
"Always," I whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head.
