Chapter 3 - The Ring on the Other FingerHannah’s demeanor shifted instantly. A complicated emotion—guilt, anxiety, or perhaps panic—flickered across her features.

"No, you're not interrupting, Julian," Hannah said quickly, stepping away from Ethan's side and walking toward the newcomer. "Mr. Caldwell is just reviewing his daughter's chart."

Julian stepped further into the light. He was striking—impeccably groomed, with sharp jawline and kind, intelligent eyes. He draped a familiar arm around Hannah’s shoulders, pulling her gently toward him. Hannah didn't pull away. In fact, she leaned into his touch, finding a visible anchor in his presence.

Ethan felt a jagged shard of ice pierce his chest.

She moved on. Of course she did. It had been twelve years. What did he expect? That she would sit in an empty room waiting like a ghost for a ghost?

"I'm Julian Vance," the man said, extending a hand toward Ethan with polite detachment. "Head of Pediatric Neurosurgery here at Lakeshore. And Hannah's... partner."

The word partner hung in the sterile air like a guillotine blade.

Ethan forced himself to move, taking Julian’s hand and shaking it with a firm, crushing grip born of pure adrenaline and suppressed rage. "Ethan Caldwell. Lily’s father."

Julian’s eyebrows rose slightly, a flicker of recognition crossing his face. "Ah. The CEO. Your company’s charitable foundation just funded our new pediatric wing, Mr. Caldwell. We appreciate the generous donation."

"I don't care about the wing," Ethan said flatly, his eyes shifting back to Hannah, who was refusing to meet his gaze. "I care about my daughter. And I expect the best care Lakeshore has to offer."

"She is getting it," Julian said smoothly, sensing the volatile tension crackling between the two former lovers. He squeezed Hannah's shoulder. "Hah, come on. Let’s grab that coffee in the lounge. You’ve been on your feet since 6 AM."

"Go ahead, Julian. I'll be there in a minute," Hannah said quietly.

Julian gave Ethan one last assessing look before stepping out into the hallway, pulling the door half-shut.

The silence returned, heavier and more suffocating than before.

"He's a good man," Ethan said, his voice laced with bitter irony. "Is that what you traded twelve years for? A savior in a white coat?"

Hannah spun around, her eyes blazing with sudden, furious tears. "Don't you dare judge my life, Ethan! Julian didn't trade me away for a corporate ladder! He didn't leave me standing in a dorm room crying while he chased millions of dollars! You lost your right to care about who I'm with the night you walked away!"

"I walked away to protect you!" Ethan roared, stepping forward, his massive frame towering over her.

"Protect me?" Hannah laughed, a bitter, broken sound. "From what? From loving you? You didn't protect me, Ethan. You destroyed me. And now, you expect me to save your daughter while you stand there looking like the tragic hero?"

She wiped a tear angrily from her cheek, her voice dropping to a trembling whisper. "Lily is my patient. I will save her because that is my oath. But do not ever pretend you know anything about the woman I became."

She turned and marched out of the room, leaving Ethan standing alone in the dark.
