Chapter 4 - The Midnight ConfessionAt 3:00 AM, the hospital was eerily quiet.

Ethan couldn't sleep. He paced the length of Lily’s room, his mind replaying Hannah’s words like a broken record. You destroyed me.

He walked quietly to the door and peered out into the dim corridor. Down the hall, the light from the physician's breakroom spilled onto the floor. Through the small glass window, he saw Hannah sitting alone at a small round table, her head in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs.

Julian was nowhere to be seen.

Without thinking, Ethan pushed the door open and stepped inside.

Hannah didn't look up immediately. She wiped her face furiously with the sleeve of her scrubs before lifting her red, swollen eyes. "I said I'm on break—"

"I didn't come to talk about the case," Ethan said softly, pulling out the chair opposite her and sitting down without permission.

Hannah stiffened, glaring at him through her tears. "Get out, Ethan."

"No."

"I will call security."

"Call them," Ethan said quietly, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the table. His dark eyes locked onto hers with an intensity that made it impossible for her to look away. "Let them throw me out. But before they do, you're going to listen to the truth. Not the version you've built up in your head to survive the last twelve years."

Hannah's breath hitched. "There is no other version. You left."

"I left because my father's company had just gone under, Hannah," Ethan said, his voice cracking slightly, revealing the raw, bleeding wound beneath his polished CEO exterior. "I left because my mother was dying of kidney failure, and I was drowning in eighty thousand dollars of medical debt. I couldn't afford groceries, let alone a future with you. You were a brilliant pre-med student with a full scholarship. If I had stayed, I would have dragged you down into the mud with me."

Hannah froze. The color drained completely from her face.

"What... what are you talking about?" she whispered. "Your father was a wealthy real estate developer—"

"My father was a fraud," Ethan corrected bitterly. "He embezzled millions, ruined hundreds of families, and then shot himself in his office bathroom, leaving me with nothing but his creditors and a stack of lawsuits. When I looked at you that night in the rain, you were smiling, talking about your medical school interviews. I couldn't let my father's sins swallow you whole."

Hannah stared at him, her mouth slightly open, the walls she had spent over a decade building crumbling into dust.

"You... you never told me," she whispered, her voice trembling violently. "You just... you cut me off. You told me we were done."

"Because I was a coward," Ethan confessed, his voice breaking as a single tear traced down his sharp jawline. "I thought I was being noble. I thought setting you free was the greatest gift I could give you. But every single day of my life, Hannah... every single day, I paid for that noble lie."

Hannah looked away, her chest heaving as she tried to process the avalanche of truth. The resentment that had fueled her professional drive, her armor against the world—it was all built on a foundation of misunderstanding.

Before either of them could speak, the wall-mounted hospital speaker crackled to life with a spine-chilling alarm.

“Code Blue, Pediatric ICU, Room 412. Code Blue, Room 412.”

Ethan’s heart stopped. Room 412.
