Ethan had practically moved into the room. He had cancelled board meetings, turned down multi-million-dollar acquisitions, and delegated his entire executive team to run Caldwell Global via encrypted video calls from a corner desk. His entire world had shrunk to the rhythmic beep of the heart monitor and the pale, fragile face of his daughter.
Hannah was there constantly. She checked Lily's vitals, adjusted her medications, and read her fairy tales when Ethan stepped out to take urgent calls.
The invisible wall between Ethan and Hannah had melted away, replaced by a quiet, heartbreaking intimacy forged in the fires of shared grief. They didn't talk about Julian. It was 9:00 PM when Ethan walked down to the hospital lobby to pick up a delivery of specialized medical supplements ordered from Switzerland.
As he stepped out of the private elevator into the main lobby, his phone rang. It was his chief operating officer, Marcus.
"Ethan, you need to see this," Marcus said, his voice tense and urgent. "A leaked financial report just hit the wire. Someone inside Caldwell Global is selling short our stock ahead of the upcoming FDA biotech merger. They're trying to orchestrate a hostile takeover."
Ethan’s eyes narrowed, his CEO instincts flaring back to life with razor-sharp fury. "Who?"
"We're tracing the IP addresses now, but Ethan... it's coming from an internal server linked to the corporate foundation. Someone with high-level clearance."
Ethan hung up without a word. A corporate war was brewing while his daughter was fighting for her breath upstairs. But before he could turn back toward the elevators, a familiar voice called out his name from behind a concrete pillar.
"Well, well, well. The great Ethan Caldwell, reduced to pacing hospital corridors."
