Chapter 2 - The Bel-Air Contract

The iron gates of 144 Bel-Air Crest opened like the jaws of a sleeping beast.

Haley paid the taxi driver her remaining forty-five dollars, leaving her with exactly the single five-dollar bill in her pocket. She stepped out into the pouring rain, staring up at the monolithic mansion. It was beautiful, but it felt like a gilded cage.

Before she could knock, the massive oak door swung open. Ethan stood there, stripped of his suit jacket. His white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his hair slightly damp. He looked less like a corporate god and more like a desperate man running out of time.

"You came," he said, stepping aside to let her in.

"I shouldn't have," Haley said, shivering from the cold. "Mr. Blake, what is this about? Your daughter... your fiancé... they looked at me like I was a ghost. I'm just a normal person. I came tonight because I want answers, and then I want to be left alone."

Ethan didn't answer immediately. He led her into a massive, dimly lit study lined with thousands of books. On the desk sat a thick legal document.

"Do you know who my late wife was, Haley?" Ethan asked, pouring two glasses of scotch. He offered her one, but she shook her head.

"The news said she died in a car accident three years ago. Eleanor Blake. An heiress."

Ethan let out a bitter laugh. "Eleanor didn't die in an accident, Haley. She was murdered. And the people who killed her are currently trying to take my company, my daughter, and my life." He walked over to a hidden wall panel, pressing a biometric scanner. The wall slid open to reveal a hidden room.

Inside hung a giant, life-sized oil painting.

Haley gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. She took three steps back, her knees trembling so violently she had to hold onto the edge of the desk.

The woman in the painting had the exact same golden-blonde hair. The same stormy blue eyes. The same delicate jawline and curve of the lips. If Haley stood next to the painting in the same dress, they would be identical twins.

"This is Eleanor," Ethan whispered, standing behind Haley. "You are her spitting image. It’s not just a coincidence. I ran a background check on you the moment I left the restaurant last week. Your mother adopted you twenty-three years ago from an anonymous agency in Chicago. Eleanor had a twin sister who went missing from the hospital the day they were born."

Haley’s world spun. "No... no, my mother wouldn't lie to me..."

"Your mother wanted to protect you," Ethan said gently. "But protection time is over. The people who killed Eleanor—the Vance family—are forcing a merger between Blake Nutrition and Vance Pharmaceuticals. Victoria Vance is forcing me into a marriage to consolidate power. If they find out who you really are—the true legal heir to the Eleanor’s family fortune—they will kill you to ensure the merger goes through."

Haley looked at the massive painting, then at her own trembling hands. "Why are you telling me this? If I'm in danger, I should go to the police!"

"The police are in their pocket," Ethan growled, stepping closer. The intensity of his presence filled the room. "There is only one way to stop them. One way to save my daughter, my company, and your life."

He pointed to the legal document on the desk.

"What is that?" Haley whispered.

"A contract marriage," Ethan stated, his voice clipping each word with corporate finality. "One year. You will step into the spotlight as Eleanor’s long-lost twin sister, recovered from obscurity. You will become my wife. We will block the merger, expose the Vance family's financial crimes, and secure Lily’s safety."

Haley laughed, a sound laced with panic. "Are you insane? I have five dollars to my name! I don't know how to be a high-society wife! I don't know how to fight billionaires!"

"I will teach you," Ethan said, his eyes burning with a dark, untamed fire. "I will give you clothes, status, power. In return, you give me the leverage to destroy the people who murdered my wife. I will pay you ten million dollars at the end of the year."

Haley stared at the contract. Ten million dollars. Safety. A chance to find out who she really was. But looking into Ethan’s eyes, she saw a dangerous man. A man driven by revenge.

"And if I say no?" Haley asked.

Before Ethan could answer, the loud blare of a security alarm echoed through the mansion. The red emergency lights began to flash.

Ethan’s phone buzzed violently. He looked at the screen, his face darkening. He turned the screen toward Haley. It was a live feed of the mansion's front gates.

Three black SUVs had rammed through the iron gates. Armed men in tactical gear were pouring out, moving toward the house.

"They followed you," Ethan whispered, his voice deadly calm. "Victoria knows who you are. She isn't waiting for the merger anymore. She's come to erase the evidence."
