Chapter 5 - The Snake's Poison

Haley was locked in the master bedroom. The windows were reinforced glass; the guards stood outside twenty-four hours a day. She was completely cut off from the world. Her phone had been confiscated, replaced with a dummy device that only called Ethan’s office.
For three days, she paced the room, her mind racing. She couldn't let Ethan win. She couldn't let him continue his horrific experiments on innocent children, and she couldn't let Lily grow up under the shadow of a killer.
On the fourth night, the door softly clicked open.
Haley stood up, expecting Ethan or a guard. Instead, a figure slipped inside, covered in a dark cloak. The person threw back the hood.
Haley gasped. It was Victoria Vance.
She looked manic, her hair disheveled, her eyes bloodshot. She had clearly escaped custody or used her remaining family wealth to bribe her way out. In her hand, she held a small, silver syringe filled with a clear liquid.
"You," Victoria hissed, her voice trembling with psychotic rage. "You ruined my family. You took my wealth, my fiancé, my life!"
"Victoria, listen to me!" Haley said, backing away, her hands raised defensively. "Ethan set us both up! He knew you wanted to kill Eleanor. He removed her guards! He used us both to take over your family’s company!"
"I don't care about Ethan's games!" Victoria shrieked, raising the syringe. "He’s too powerful to touch now! But you... you're just a fake! A ghost! If I kill you, I take away his ultimate prize. I take away his perfect corporate asset!"
Victoria lunged across the room, tackling Haley onto the bed. The two women struggled fiercely. Victoria was fueled by pure madness, driving the needle toward Haley’s neck.
Haley fought back with everything she had. She grabbed Victoria’s wrist, twisting it with all her strength.
Clink.
During the struggle, Haley’s old purse, which sat on the nightstand, fell to the floor. Out rolled the single, crumpled five-dollar bill she had kept all this time.
Seeing the bill triggered something inside Haley. A reminder of where she came from. A reminder that she was a survivor, not a victim. She wasn't Eleanor. She was Haley Monroe.
With a surge of adrenaline, Haley slammed her forehead into Victoria’s nose. Victoria cried out, blood spurting from her face as she lost her grip. Haley grabbed the heavy crystal lamp from the nightstand and smashed it against the side of Victoria’s head.
Victoria went limp, collapsing onto the floor, unconscious.
Haley stood over her, breathing heavily. She looked at the syringe, then at the open door. The guards outside were mysteriously absent—likely bribed by Victoria to let her in to do the dirty work.
This was her only chance.
Haley knelt down, picked up the five-dollar bill, and stuffed it into her pocket. She grabbed Victoria’s burner phone from her pocket and ran out into the night, escaping through the mansion's service elevator.
She didn't run to the police. She knew Ethan controlled them. Instead, she dialed the one number she remembered from the documents in the locked room: The direct hotline to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Corporate Crimes and Human Rights Division.

"Hello?" a voice answered on the other end.
"My name is Haley Vance-Blake," Haley said, her voice dropping all fear, replaced by a cold, lethal determination. "I have the encryption keys, the diary, and the location of Ethan Blake's illegal chemical testing facilities. And I am ready to burn his empire to the ground."
