Chapter 4 - The Locked Room

The victory at the gala was short-lived. Behind the closed doors of the Blake mansion, the atmosphere shifted from triumphant to chillingly oppressive.
Haley was no longer the poor girl with five dollars, but she felt more impoverished than ever. She was confined to the east wing of the estate. While the media painted her as the Cinderella who inherited a multi-billion-dollar empire, she was essentially a prisoner in paradise. Ethan was always working, his demeanor toward her turning increasingly distant, almost transactional.
The only bright spot was Lily. The little girl clung to Haley, finding comfort in her presence.
"Haley," Lily whispered one afternoon while they were painting in the playroom. "Can you help me find my music box? It’s in the forbidden room. Daddy forgot to lock it today."
Haley’s heart skipped a beat. The locked room. The private sanctuary of Eleanor Blake that Ethan strictly forbade anyone from entering.
"Lily, we shouldn't go in there. Your dad would be very angry," Haley said, trying to remain calm.
"But the music box plays the song Mommy wrote for me," Lily pleaded, her big blue eyes filling with tears. "Please?"
Haley hesitated. Her curiosity, fueled by the growing suspicion that Ethan was hiding something deeply sinister, won over. "Okay. Fast. We enter, grab the music box, and leave."
They walked down the long, dimly lit corridor of the west wing. Sure enough, the heavy mahogany door was slightly ajar, a sliver of light spilling onto the carpet.
Haley pushed the door open. The room was perfectly preserved, smelling heavily of dust and... lavender. It was a time capsule of Eleanor’s life. Clothes hung in the closet, jewelry sat on the vanity.
While Lily ran to the closet to search for her music box, Haley’s eyes were drawn to a massive mahogany desk. On top of it sat a leather-bound journal. The pages looked worn, water-stained.
Haley walked over, her hands shaking as she opened it. The handwriting was elegant, identical to the script she had seen on Ethan's contract.
It was Eleanor’s diary.
Haley flipped to the final entries, dated just days before Eleanor’s death. As her eyes scanned the words, her breath hitched.
“January 14th. I found the files. Ethan thinks I don’t know about his project, 'Genesis'. Blake Nutrition isn't making toddler snacks. They are testing unregulated chemical supplements on orphanages in Eastern Europe to boost cognitive growth for corporate funding. It's monstrous. When I threatened to go to the FBI, he threatened Lily. I am terrified of my husband. He isn't the man I married. He is a psychopath. If anything happens to me, it wasn't the Vances. It was Ethan.”
Haley choked back a scream.
The Vances didn't kill Eleanor. Ethan had framed them. He used Haley to publicize the Vance family's crimes, destroying his rivals while completely covering up his own horrific truth. The car accident, the murder—it was all engineered by the man she was now married to.
"Looking for something, wife?"
A deep, chilling voice boomed from the doorway.
Haley whipped around, slamming the diary shut.
Ethan stood in the doorway, his silhouette imposing, blocking out the light from the hallway. In his hand, he held a glass of scotch, his eyes completely devoid of the warmth he had shown her in the restaurant. He looked like a demon clad in a bespoke suit.
Lily whimpered, running to hide behind Haley’s legs.
"Ethan..." Haley stammered, backing away until her spine hit the desk. "You... you lied to me. You framed Victoria."
Ethan walked into the room, his steps slow, deliberate. "Framed? No. Victoria did try to kill Eleanor. She did sabotage the brakes. I simply... allowed her to do it. I took away Eleanor’s security detail that night. Victoria did the dirty work, and I waited for the perfect moment to use it to destroy her family."
He stopped mere inches from Haley, towering over her. He reached out, his cold fingers tracing her jawline. Haley flinched, but he gripped her chin tightly, forcing her to look into his dark eyes.
"You see, Haley, you were a miracle," Ethan whispered, his voice a seductive, terrifying purr. "A penniless girl who looked exactly like my dead wife, sitting at the next table, desperate enough to accept a dinner. You were the perfect pawn. With the Vances ruined, Blake Nutrition now controls the entire pharmaceutical market. And you... you signed the contract. You are legally tied to me. If you speak a word of this, I will ruin you. I will make sure you disappear, just like your sister."
"You're a monster," Haley spat, tears of anger streaming down her face.
May you like
Ethan smiled, a cruel, mocking twist of his lips. "Perhaps. But I'm a wealthy, powerful monster. And you have exactly five dollars in your pocket, Haley. Who do you think the world will believe?"
He turned to the door. "Security! Take Mrs. Blake to her room. And lock the doors from the outside."
