Chapter 3 - The Gala of Ghosts

"Get in the panic room!" Ethan roared, slamming the hidden wall panel shut, locking Haley inside the room with the portrait of her dead sister.
Inside the darkness, Haley could hear the muffled sounds of gunshots, breaking glass, and shouting echoing through the mansion. She pressed her back against the wall, clutching her five-dollar bill like a talisman. Minutes felt like centuries. She realized then that her old life was officially dead. Whether she liked it or not, she was in the crosshairs of monsters.
When the door finally slid open an hour later, the smell of gunpowder filled the air. Ethan stood there, his white shirt stained with blood—thankfully not his own. His face was cold, ruthlessly set.
"The contract," Haley said, her voice shaking but resolute. "Give me the pen."
Ethan didn't smile. He merely handed her the fountain pen. With a swift stroke, Haley Monroe ceased to exist. She was now the dangerous ghost brought back to destroy an empire.
Three weeks later. The Grand Plaza Hotel.
The annual Blake-Vance Charity Gala was the event of the year. The media line stretched down the block, flashbulbs creating a blinding wall of light. Tonight was supposed to be the public announcement of the merger between Blake Nutrition and Vance Pharmaceuticals—and the official engagement of Ethan Blake and Victoria Vance.
Victoria stood in the VIP lounge, sipping champagne, wearing a custom crimson gown. She looked victorious. "Where is Ethan?" she hissed to her father, Arthur Vance, a sinister-looking older man with a cane. "The press is waiting. The papers are signed on our end."
"He’ll be here, Victoria. He has no choice. We broke his security, we threatened his daughter. He knows what happens if he backs out," Arthur sneered.
The double doors of the ballroom swung open.
The chatter in the room instantly died. The orchestra stopped playing. A collective gasp rippled through the hundreds of high-society guests.
Ethan Blake entered the room. But he wasn't alone.
On his arm was a woman who looked like royalty. She wore an emerald-green silk gown that flowed like liquid wealth. Her golden hair was swept up in a flawless chignon, exposing a diamond necklace worth millions. Her posture was elegant, her gaze calm, cold, and commanding.
It was Haley.
Behind her, two bodyguards carried a massive electronic display board.
Victoria’s champagne glass slipped from her hand, shattering loudly on the marble floor. Her eyes nearly popped out of her head. "No... no, it can't be..."
Ethan led Haley right to the center stage, taking the microphone from the stunned announcer.
"Ladies and gentlemen, members of the press," Ethan’s voice boomed, rich and commanding. "Tonight was supposed to be an announcement of a merger. But plans change. I would like to introduce you to the new majority shareholder of Blake Nutrition, and my new wife."
The crowd erupted into whispers. Flashbulbs went off like machine guns.
Ethan turned to Haley, a look of simulated adoration in his eyes that felt terrifyingly real. "Meet Haley Vance-Blake. The long-lost twin sister of my late wife, Eleanor. The rightful heir to the Vance family trust that was illegally hidden twenty-three years ago."
Arthur Vance slammed his cane against the floor, his face purple with rage. "This is a fraud! An imposter! Eleanor had no sister! Security, remove this woman!"
Haley stepped forward, taking the microphone from Ethan. She looked directly at Victoria, who was shaking with a mix of rage and terror.
"Is it a fraud, Arthur?" Haley’s voice was smooth as silk, trained by Ethan’s top PR specialists over the last three weeks. "Because according to the DNA results, birth records, and the bank routing numbers currently playing on the screens behind me... your family has been embezzling billions from my birth mother's estate. And more importantly..."
Haley paused, the room dead silent. She took a step closer to Victoria, her voice dropping to a dangerous, chilling whisper that amplified through the microphone. "...we found the brake-line diagnostic report from Eleanor’s car. The one with your digital signature on the garage authorization form, Victoria."
Victoria screamed, lunging at Haley. "You bitch! I killed her, and I'll kill you too!"
The words echoed through the entire ballroom.
Victoria froze, realizing too late what she had just confessed to in front of three hundred guests and fifty news cameras.
Arthur Vance collapsed into a chair, clutching his chest.
"Security," Ethan said coldly. "Assault. Embezzlement. And murder. Take them away."
As the police—who had been waiting in the wings, backed by federal warrants Ethan had spent weeks securing—rushed the stage to arrest Victoria and Arthur, the crowd erupted into absolute chaos.
In the middle of the storm, Ethan wrapped a protective arm around Haley’s waist, pulling her close. For a second, Haley felt safe. She looked up at him, thinking the nightmare was finally over.
But as Ethan looked down at her, his eyes weren't filled with relief. They were dark, calculating, and victorious.
He leaned into her ear. "Perfect execution, Haley. You played your part beautifully."

A cold dread pooled in Haley’s stomach. Played your part.
She looked at the chaos around her, then at the man holding her. She had destroyed the Vance family. But as she looked at Ethan, she realized a terrifying truth: She had just helped a monster eliminate his only rivals. And now, she was trapped in his house, bound by a contract, with no way out.
