Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Past

Michael didn't let her leave. He doubled the security on the floor, but the dread in the room was palpable. Grace finally told him the truth: Noah wasn't just a baby; he was the heir to a fortune that had been stolen. She had been the nanny for a powerful, cutthroat dynasty—the Vanes. She had witnessed a murder, escaped with the infant son of her employer, and had been on the run for six months.
"Why did you take the baby?" Michael demanded, his heart hammering.
"Because he was next," Grace wept. "They were going to discard him once the inheritance was cleared."
Michael felt his world tilt. He was a businessman; he knew how the world worked. He knew the Vane family. They weren't just wealthy; they were untouchables. By helping Grace, he had inadvertently declared war on the most dangerous people in New York.
That night, while Kelly slept, Michael stood at the window, watching the street below. He saw the black sedans circling the block. His own home was no longer a fortress; it was a target.
