Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

The heavy silence in the St. Jude Ballroom shattered into a chaotic storm of whispers. Flashbulbs from hidden wedding videographers suddenly felt like interrogation lights. Daniel froze, his chest heaving as the carefully constructed illusion of his life began to fracture in real-time.
"Leo, that is enough," Martha barked, stepping forward with a ferocity that caught everyone off guard. Her voice, usually smooth and authoritative, cracked with desperation. She grabbed Leo’s small shoulder, her fingers digging in perhaps a bit too tightly. "You are tired, and you've been manipulated. Come with Grandma right now."
"Get your hands off him, Martha," a cold, sharp voice cut through the ambient panic.
The crowd parted. Striding down the center aisle was a woman nobody expected to see. Sarah.
She wasn't the broken, impoverished wreck Martha had described to Daniel for years. Sarah looked breathtaking in a tailored emerald-green silk dress, her posture unyielding, her eyes locked onto her former mother-in-law with an expression of pure, unadulterated vengeance. Behind her walked two men in sleek charcoal suits—family court attorneys holding heavy leather briefcases.
Daniel staggered backward, nearly tripping over the hem of his custom tuxedo jacket. "Sarah? What... what are you doing here? How did you even get in?"
"Security knows who I am, Daniel, even if you forgot," Sarah replied, her voice smooth, cutting through the jazz-infused acoustics of the room. She bypassed Daniel entirely and knelt down, pulling trembling Leo into her arms. The boy buried his face in her neck, sobbing quietly. "And I’m here because my son called me in a panic twenty minutes ago. He knew what kind of monster was wearing my ring, and he refused to let his father walk blindly into a trap."
Elena’s knees buckled. She grabbed the edge of the mahogany sweetheart table to steady herself, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. "This... this is an ambush," she whispered, her voice trembling as she looked at Daniel with tear-filled eyes. "Daniel, please. You know me. You know my family. Don't listen to this... this bitter ex-wife who just wants to ruin our happiest day!"
Daniel looked back and forth between Elena—the woman he had sworn to love until death do them part—and Sarah, who was holding the son he hadn't been allowed to see in two years. The cognitive dissonance was deafening.
"Sarah," Daniel said, his voice a hoarse whisper. "What is Leo talking about? What did she say?"

Sarah stood up slowly, keeping Leo shielded behind her skirt. She reached into her handbag, pulled out a thick manila folder stamped with a high-end forensic accounting seal, and tossed it directly onto the white-clothed wedding table, right beside the tier-five crystal champagne glasses.
"Ask your bride," Sarah said coldly, her gaze piercing straight into Elena’s soul. "Ask her whose bank accounts funded this three-million-dollar spectacle. Ask her what happened to your corporate portfolio over the last eight months. And above all... ask her who really engineered the smear campaign that kept you away from your son."
