Chapter 3 - The Forensic Audit of a Lie

"Open it, Daniel."
Sarah’s voice commanded the entire ballroom. The string quartet had long since stopped playing, and the hundred-plus elite guests—socialites, CEOs, and high-society patrons—were glued to their seats, holding their collective breath. Nobody dared to leave. This was better than any Broadway show; it was a high-society execution.
Daniel’s hands shook as he reached for the manila folder. He pulled back the heavy twine and slid out a stack of documents covered in financial charts, wire transfer receipts, and digital transcripts.
"What is this?" Daniel muttered, scanning the first page. His eyes widened. It was a ledger from an offshore account registered in the Cayman Islands under a shell corporation called Vanguard Holdings.
"That," one of Sarah’s attorneys stepped forward, speaking with crisp, professional authority, "is the paper trail of how Mr. Vance’s multi-million-dollar tech startup, Apex Solutions, was systematically gutted from the inside out."
Elena let out a choked cry. She lunged forward, trying to snatch the papers from Daniel’s hands, but Martha intercepted her, grabbing Elena's wrist with a fierce, panicked grip.
"Shut up! Don't listen to them, Daniel, it's forged!" Martha shrieked, her face turning an alarming shade of crimson. "Sarah has always been vindictive! She hired these lawyers to destroy your happiness out of pure jealousy!"
"Jealousy?" Sarah laughed—a sharp, mirthless sound that echoed off the crystal chandeliers. She took a step toward Martha, forcing the older woman to back away. "Martha, please. Do you really think I’d spend two years building a forensic audit just out of jealousy? No. I stayed quiet while you manipulated Daniel into believing I was unstable. I stayed quiet while you restricted my visitation rights. But when I found out you and your precious little protégé here were planning to clean out Daniel’s remaining liquidity and leave him bankrupt on a private island... I decided it was time to crash the party."
Daniel looked down at the documents. The data didn't lie. Page after page showed systematic transfers originating from Apex Solutions’ primary operating accounts, funneled through dummy LLCs, and landing directly in accounts controlled exclusively by Elena Vance—née Sterling—and, surprisingly, a secondary beneficiary: Martha Vance.
"Elena..." Daniel turned slowly, his face drained of all color, his eyes burning with a terrifying, quiet fury. "Explain this. Every single dollar in Apex represents ten years of my life. Explain why your personal signature is on these corporate wire transfers."
Elena collapsed onto a gilt-edged Chiavari chair, her pristine wedding makeup streaking as hot tears carved tracks down her cheeks. The mask of untouchable high-society elegance had completely dissolved, leaving behind a cornered, desperate grifter.
"I had to, Daniel!" Elena sobbed, abandoning all pretense. She clutched at the bodice of her designer gown, rocking back and forth. "My family... we lost everything in the real estate crash two years ago. My father’s debts were drowning us! When I met you, you were the golden ticket. But you were too cautious, too stubborn about protecting your assets! You wouldn't merge your accounts! I had no choice but to take what I needed to keep my family from prison!"
The ballroom erupted. Gasps and murmurs cascaded through the rows of guests. High-society friends who had toasted the couple minutes ago were now pulling out their phones, recording every second of the carnage.
Daniel stared at the woman he had loved, feeling as though a physical abyss had opened beneath his feet. "You lied about everything. How we met. Your family's wealth. Your love for me... it was all a scam."

"Not just her, son," a calm, deep voice resonated from the back of the room.
Daniel blinked, snapping his head toward the entrance. Through the double doors walked a man in a sharp federal law enforcement windbreaker, flanked by two local police officers.
