Chapter 6 - The Counter-Strike

Richard’s face drained of color, his arrogant posture instantly evaporating. He lunged toward his satellite phone, his thumb slamming frantically against the screen to trigger the server wipe.
"Stop him!" Agent Hayes roared.
Before Richard’s thumb could hit the execute button, one of the cyber-warfare specialists raised a specialized tactical device and pointed it across the room. A sharp, high-frequency electromagnetic pulse hummed through the air. Richard’s satellite phone sparked violently in his hand, scorching his palm and dropping to the marble floor with a sharp clatter.
"EMP override successful," the specialist reported crisply. "Apex Solutions core servers have been secured. Encryption keys reversed. Vanguard Holdings assets are now frozen under emergency federal injunction."
Elena shrieked, dropping to her knees as her multi-million-dollar escape plan dissolved into smoke and static. "No! No, this isn't how it was supposed to go! Uncle Richard, do something!"
"Uncle Richard is done doing anything," Arthur Kensington said coldly, walking past Daniel and stopping right in front of Richard Sterling. Arthur looked down at the disgraced corporate raider with absolute contempt. "You forged signatures, you laundered funds across international borders, and you attempted corporate extortion on live recording equipment. Agent Hayes, take them all away."
The federal agents moved with ruthless efficiency. Handcuffs clicked sharply into place around Richard’s wrists, followed by Elena—whose pristine white wedding dress trailed dust and spilled champagne as she was hauled away—and finally Martha, who was sobbing uncontrollably, begging her son for forgiveness that would never come.
As the doors closed behind the disgraced trio, the St. Jude Ballroom fell into an eerie, suffocating hush. The hundred-plus elite guests sat frozen, too stunned to leave, whispering frantically among themselves.
Daniel stood motionless in the center of the wreckage. The custom tuxedo felt like a straitjacket. His company was safe, his assets were recovered, but his entire reality had been ripped to shreds. He had trusted a monster and discarded the only person who had ever truly loved him.
Slowly, Daniel turned around.
Sarah was standing just a few feet away. She had crouched down to wipe a stray tear from Leo’s cheek, murmuring gentle words of comfort to the boy. When she stood back up, her eyes met Daniel’s. There was no anger left in them—only a deep, sorrowful exhaustion.
"Sarah..." Daniel choked out, his voice barely a whisper. He took a hesitant step forward, his hands trembling. "I... I don't even know how to begin to say I'm sorry. I was blind. I was a fool. I let them poison my mind against you, against our son..."
"You did, Daniel," Sarah interrupted quietly, her voice steady and unyielding. She didn't raise her voice, but every word carried the weight of a hammer falling on iron. "You chose to believe a lie because it was easier than looking at the truth. You shut your own flesh and blood out of your life for two years because someone told you he was an inconvenience."
Daniel dropped his gaze to the floor, tears finally breaking free and spilling down his cheeks. "I know. I deserve everything. You can take everything—the company, the money, the house. Just... please, let me see my son. Let me try to make it right."

Sarah looked down at Leo, who peeked out from behind her skirt, looking up at his father with a mixture of fear and lingering hope.
"You don't have to buy your way back into his life, Daniel," Sarah said softly, turning toward the exit. "And you certainly don't need my permission to be a father. But earning his trust back? That's going to take a lot more than a wedding apology."
