Chapter 10 - The Gala and the Unexpected TwistThree months later, the Centennial Museum’s annual grand gala was the most talked-about event in the country.

The ballroom was bathed in warm golden light, filled with Chicago’s elite, cultural icons, and international press. At the center of it all was the stunning debut of the "America at the Turn of the Century" exhibition—curated entirely by Mara Ellis.

Standing on the grand staircase in a sweeping, emerald-silk gown that mirrored the night of her triumph, Mara looked out over the crowded gallery. The plaque by the entrance bore her name in bold, uncompromised letters: Director of Special Exhibitions: Mara Ellis.

"You look breathtaking," a low, familiar voice murmured near her ear.

Mara turned to see Edward Hale standing beside her, impeccably tailored in a classic tuxedo, holding two glasses of champagne. He handed her one, his fingers brushing hers.

"Thank you," Mara smiled, taking a sip. "Though I still can't believe we actually pulled it off. The audit is complete, the board has been restructured, and the exhibit is a massive success."

"I told you," Edward said, his slate-gray eyes locking onto hers with intense, unmistakable warmth. "You were never invisible, Mara. You were just waiting for the right stage."

Before Mara could reply, a microphone chimed across the ballroom. Arthur Sterling stepped up to the podium to announce the evening's final donor awards.

"Before we conclude tonight," Sterling announced into the microphone, "I have one final, major announcement regarding the future of the entire Hale Museum Network. Effective tonight, our primary benefactor and CEO, Edward Hale, is stepping down from day-to-day operations to focus on global acquisitions—and he has appointed a new Co-Chair and President to run the entire network."

The room went completely silent. Mara turned to look at Edward in shock. He hadn't mentioned this.

"Please welcome," Sterling continued with a proud smile, "our new President and Co-Chair of the Centennial Foundation... Victoria Vance."

Mara’s breath caught in her throat. She whipped her head around to look at Edward, searching his face for answers.

Edward didn't look surprised. In fact, a faint, cryptic smile played on his lips as he turned to face her directly.

"Surprise," Edward whispered softly, clinking his champagne glass against hers. "Welcome to the top, Madame President. Now... let's run the world together."
