Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the ArchiveBy Monday morning, the atmosphere in the Centennial Museum offices was thick with invisible static. Mara walked past the glass-walled cubicles carrying a cardboard box of personal items, though she wasn't leaving—she was moving up.

Literally. Her new office was on the fourth floor, right next to the executive suites.
As she stepped out of the elevator, she found Peter Maddox waiting by her old desk. His face was pale, his usually immaculate tie slightly askew, and his eyes were bloodshot with panic and rage.
"What is this, Mara?" Peter hissed, stepping directly into her path. He held a printed copy of an internal memo bearing Edward Hale’s digital signature. "HR just escorted me out of my office. They said my position has been terminated due to 'administrative irregularities.' And they said you are taking over."
Mara didn’t flinch. She adjusted the box in her arms and looked at the man who had patronized, silenced, and exploited her for four years.
"It’s called accountability, Peter," Mara said calmly. "You should look it up. It’s been missing from your ledger for a long time."
"You went over my head!" Peter snarled, stepping closer, his voice rising enough to draw the attention of nearby employees. "You manipulative little—you think Edward Hale cares about you? You’re just a novelty to him! A convenient excuse to restructure! The moment the board realizes what you've done, they'll blacklist you from every cultural institution in the country!"
"Let them try," a deep, chilling voice echoed from down the corridor.
Peter froze.
Edward Hale walked out of the executive corridor, flanked by two towering security guards in sharp suits. The hallway went dead silent. Every head in the open-plan office snapped toward them.
Edward stopped a few feet away from Peter, towering over him by several inches. His expression was carved from granite.
"Mr. Maddox," Edward said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the entire floor. "You are currently standing on museum property after your security clearance has been revoked. I suggest you take your belongings from the reception desk before I have you physically removed for trespassing."
Peter’s face mottled with fury and humiliation. He glared at Edward, then shot a venomous look at Mara. "This isn't over," he spat out, turning on his heel and storming toward the elevators.
Edward watched him go, then turned his slate-gray eyes to Mara. The harshness in his expression melted instantly, replaced by a quiet intensity.
"Are you settled in upstairs yet?" Edward asked, ignoring the staring employees around them.

"Just moving my things now," Mara replied, feeling a hot wave of self-consciousness as dozens of colleagues whispered behind their monitors.
"Good. Join me in my office in twenty minutes," Edward said quietly, stepping closer so only she could hear. "We need to discuss the board’s emergency meeting tonight. Things are moving faster than anticipated."
