Chapter 3 - The Counter-OfferThe silence in the office stretched so long that Mara could hear the distant hum of the building's ventilation system. Edward pushed himself off the desk, walked over to a wet bar in the corner, and poured a small glass of sparkling water. He didn't offer her any.

"Invisible," Edward murmured, turning the word over in his mouth like a rare vintage wine. He walked back, stopping just a few feet from her chair. "Well, Miss Ellis, I can assure you that as of last night at 9:15 PM, nobody in this organization is more visible to me than you are."

Mara’s cheeks flushed. "If this is about the resignation letter, Mr. Hale, I am prepared to clear my desk by Monday noon. I don't want a scandal, and I certainly didn't mean to drag you into internal departmental politics."

"Scandal?" Edward chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. "Do you think I care about office gossip? What I care about is competence, and right now, my museum is bleeding talent because middle-management parasites like Peter Maddox are taking credit for the work of brilliant coordinators."

He tossed a manila folder onto her lap.

Mara opened it. Inside were printed email transcripts, budget allocation logs, and internal memos dating back two years. Every single document proved what she had known in her gut: Peter Maddox had systematically intercepted her project proposals, stripped her name from executive summaries, and presented her ideas as his own to the board of directors.

"Where did you get these?" Mara breathed, staring at the undeniable proof of her stolen career.

"I have people who look into operational inefficiencies," Edward said simply. "Maddox thought he was clever. He didn't realize that when you alter metadata on server files, a digital footprint remains. Now..." Edward leaned in, resting his hands on the arms of her chair, boxing her in with his intense presence. "Let's talk about your future."

"My future?"

"Your resignation is rejected," Edward stated flatly. "Effective immediately, you are not resigning. Peter Maddox is."

Mara stared at him, stunned. "You're firing Peter?"

"I’m cleaning house," Edward corrected, straightening up. "And as for your position... I am creating a new role: Director of Special Exhibitions and Curatorial Innovation. You will report directly to me, not to a department head. Your salary will double, and you will have full autonomy over the upcoming 'America at the Turn of the Century' exhibit."

The room seemed to spin. Double her salary? Direct oversight? Total creative freedom? It was every professional dream she had ever harbored, handed to her by the most feared man in the city on a Saturday morning.

"There is just one condition," Edward added, his eyes glinting with a sharp, calculating challenge.
